Description
1 pretrial) s-Tarrns PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL I, MQGOVERN, OF MONTPELIER, VERMONT, ASSIG-NOR TO C. C. PUTNAM, EXEGUTQR 0F PRENTICE C. WRIGHT, DECEASED, AND ADMINISTRATOR OF MEDAD WEIGHT, DECEASED.
POLISHING-WHEEL,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jiny'es, 1914.
Application filed-September 1a, 1913. Serial No. 789,668.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL FREDERICK McGovern, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Montpelier, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing-Wheels, of 'which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The polishing-wheel provided by this invention. is designed particularly for use with einery or other abrasive in smoothing and polishing granite, marble, or other stone, and it also may be used on other materials,
The device includes flanges or scrolls that. are held together in the proper relative po sitions without the employmentof a disk, and the flanges or scrolls are uncovered except over small areas where they are at tached to a cross member. This makes it convenient to place abrasive from the top of the wheelbetwcen the scrolls where it is available for action between them and the surface being treated; and, when the abrasive is spread over the surface being treated, it has a tendency to work upwardly from between the scrolls and off the top of the wheel and to return .to the sur ace, whereby a substantially continuous movement of abrasive is maintained and the ciency of action enhanced. Theparticular construction and arrangement of the flanges or scrolls 9f the wheel are such that during rotation the centrifugal tendency of abrasive to be thrown from under the wheel is counteracted and the abrasive is kept where itis capable of efficient action against the surface being treated, and the wheel has been found in practice to cause a more equal dis-'- tribution of abrasive than in wheels commonly in use.
The construction of the wheel and ar-.
rangement of its parts will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part spondingparts int-he views of the drawing, of whichi Figure 1 is a top view of the polishing; wheel; Fig. 2 is a side view; and Fig. 3 is a bottom view.
Haring more particular reference to thedla mg, ,4 designates diametrically-positiolled S members, which extend from the periphery sufficiently near to the center of the wheel to connect with the inner scrolls mentioned hereinafter. In order to afford a connecting means at or near the center of the, wheel for a shaft or other element for rotating the wheel over a surface being treated, a member or bar 5, spanning. the space at the center between the cross members and within the inner scrolls, is attached to those members by bolts 6. or the cross members and member 5 may be formed integrally. The cross incrnbers constitutea holding means for the ring and scrolls mentioned hereafter. i a
An outer annular ring 7 is secured to the under sides ct the cross members ator.
near their outer ends, and within the ring there are a plurality of spiral scrolls 8. The under sides of the ring and scrolls are in the same plane, and the cross members are comparatively narrow so that they cover only small portions of the scrolls.
The scrolls are of sufficient length and curve to extend from one cross member to the other, to which portions they are secured at their ends and held in spaced substantially parallel relation so that there are channels 9 between them, which are open at the top,
Although there maybe one or any other desired number of sets of scrolls and more than one set of cross members, in the embodiment shown in-dthe drawing as'illus;
trative of the principles of the invention,
one set of cross members and two sets of scrolls are used, the scrolls of eac set from the periphery'oi the wheel tower .the center being designated by the characters A, B, C, and
The scrolls are so arranged and curved,
that the rear end of every scroll of a set has position nearer the center of the wheel than the front end of the corresponding scroll of the other set, so that all scrolls of each set, except the two inner ones D, .terminute in front of the channels between the corresponding scrolls of the other set and the scrolls .next inwardly thereof. This arraniement imparts-t0 abrasive discharged at t c end of one channel a tendency to go into a channel of the next succeeding set that is nearer the center of the wheel, and thus the tendency of abrasive to be thrown from under the wheel under centrifugal infiuence to agreat extent is nullified.
The crossmembers, ring, and scrolls in practice preferably are castas anintegral unit. However, if desired, the parts may be formed separately by casting, forging, or otherwise, and connected" by any suitable means'tfoiorm a complete wheel.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire "to secure by Let-' ters Patent,
1. A polishing-wheel comprising a holding member, and sets of scrolls secured thereto'having channels therebetween, the parts being so arranged that some scrolls of a set terminate in front of the channels between the vcorresponding scrolls of another 'set and the scrolls next inwardly thereof.
2'. A polishing-wheel comprising a holding member, and sets of scrolls secured thereto having channels therebetween that are open at the top, the parts being so arranged that some scrolls of a set terminate in front of the channels between the corresponding scrolls of another set and the scrolls next inwardly thereof.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
