PETERS c0 mum-mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON ROSS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE ROSS, MOYER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HUB FOR POLlSHlNG BRUSHE S.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 680,418, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No. 483768. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON ROSS, a citiien of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hubs for Polishing Brushes, of which the following is a specification;
My invention is primarily designed to hold the ring-sections of a polishing-brush.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an eXpansible hub on which any desired number of brush-rings are placed and clamped in position, the parts being so constructed that a greater or less number of brush-sections may be employed, according to the kind of work desired.
The features of my invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-'- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improvement with two brush-sections shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical sec tion of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the clamping parts. Fig. 5 is a plan view, on a reduced scale, of one of the brushsections in position upon the clamping-hub.
A represents the sleeve of the hub, provided with a bore a to fit upon the driving-shaft. B represents a flange cast on and with said sleeve. Cast integral with the flange and sleeve are three lugs C, the peripheries of these lugs serving to center and support the rings of the brush-sections.
E represents the sliding clamping member of the hub. It is likewise provided with three lugs or ribs D, cast integral therewith, the peripheries of which likewise form a seatingsupport for the rings of the brush-sections. F represents the bore of said clamping-section, which fits and slides upon the sleeve A of the hub.
B represents a clamping-flange which is the counterpart of the flange B and with which it coacts in clamping the ring-sections together.
The lugs C of the fixed member are screwthreaded, so as to receive the clamping-bolts G, which are loosely passed through orifices c of the clamping member. These orifices are placed intermediate to the lugs D and op'- posite the lugs C. This brings the lugs C and D an equal distance apart around the circle, as shown in the end view Fig. 5.
H represents a section of the polishingbrush and is of the usual form of construction. It is composed of the ring-sections I and the brush members J, which may be of any flexible polishing material, such as strips of muslin, &c. The sleeve A and the sliding member E are generically telescoping sections adapted to clamp between them a ro tary brush, and the construction may be variously modified in detail to effect this purpose.
When it is desired to assemble the brush, the sliding member is removed by loosening the clamp-bolts, and any desired number of ring-sections are slipped upon the lugs C, and then the clam ping memberis placed upon the sleeve and the clamping=bolts screwed up so that they engage and firmly hold the ring for the brush-section in position. These rings may be readily increased and diminished, so as to have any desired width of brush-face.
Having described my invention, what I claim is-' V A brush-hub composed of a sleeve section adapted to be secured to a shaft and provided with a clamping-flange, and a series of peripheral lugs upon said sleeve, in combination with a removable clamping member provided with lugs adapted to coact with the lugs of the fixed section, and serve as a seat for the brushrings, and clamping-bolts adapted to draw said clamping members together and engage the brush-sections, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. v
SIMON ROSS. Witnesses:
OLIVER B. KAISER, PEARL MCMICHAEL.
