MARK H. PRESOOTT, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent/No. 154,805, dated September 8, 1874; application led August `155, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARK H. PREscorT, of Ottawa,in the county of La Salle and 'State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Attaching Metallic Boot and Shoe Heels, of which the following is a specification:
The metallic heel is hollow, and it is secured by screws. The peculiar feature of my invention relates to a plate of metal that is confined to the sole by the nails that are used to fasten the edges of the uppers in lasting, and this plate secures in place the nuts for the screws that hold on the heel, so that when the heelfis clamped in place by said screws the edges thereof press upon and rmly hold the rippers, the counter, and the lining, in addition to the nailing in lasting; and, besides this, the said metallic heel firmly clamps and binds in place the leather forming the shank ofthe boot or shoe, rendering it unnecessary to continue the said leather entirely over the heel portion ofthe boot or shoe. l
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the shoe at the heel. Fig.V
2 is an inverted plan, showing the plate as secured by the` edge of the uppers and the nails; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
The insole a and uppers b, including the lining and counter, when used, are of ordinary character; so also is the shank d of the boot or shoe, except that the leather thereof is only required to extend within the metallic box-heel e, and not to ll the same. This boxheel is made concave at i, to [it the surface of the shank and firmly clamp the leather thereof when the heel is sscrewed to place 'by the screws k k. The metallic plate ois made with a groove, r, into which is inserted a bar or two nuts c, having the threaded holes for the screws k, and the bar or nuts are between the plate o and insole, and the plate o is of a size and shape adapted to sit upon the heel portion of the insole, and to receive over its edges the lower edges of the uppers in lasting the boot or shoe, and the nails s, driven through the uppers, the plate o, and into the insole, secure the three vparts iirmly together, and the plate maybe held also by other nails at t. These nails ofcourse are clinched within the insole. Whenthe heel is put in place the iouter and upper, edges thereof rest against the material of' the uppers where it passes below the insole and plate o, so that the uppers are clamped rmly by the screwing up of the heel.
I claim as my invention- The plate o, receiving the bar or nuts c for the screws la, and confined to the sole by the nails that hold the edges of the uppers, in combination with the metallic heel, the edges of which clamp said uppers and the leather of the shank, as specified. A
Signed by me this 8th day of August, A. D. 1874.
MARK H. PRESCOTT.
