IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS, BOOK'GASES, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,653, dated September 1, i874; application filed' June 25j, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J. H. DLAMATTER, of Mellington, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, Book-Gases, &c.; and Ido hereby declare the'follo wing'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will .enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to make and use it, reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings,which form Apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical transverse' section through a writin g cabinet having my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification.

'This invention has relation, chiefly, to cabi-- net writing desks, h aving hinged folding leaves, which'are supported, when lowered, by

means of sliding bars located in recessesbelow the leaf 5 and it consists in the novel construction and combination of devices for automatically projecting and withdrawing said slides when the leaf is lowered and raised, as hereinafter described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates an ordinary cabinet writing-desk, which is furnished with a hingedleaf ordoor, B, adapted for use as a writing table or surface when lowered, and designed to close Vthe desk when raised. vC are the slides, which, when the leaf is lowered, constitute a support to the same and relie\'e the hinges of strain.

Ordinarilythese supports are moved out and in by hand ,but I render them automatic in operation by connecting them to the leaf through the mediumof bent rods d, pivoted or jointed at the ends, respectively, to thev slides and to the leaf', as shown.

Thus, A,it .will be perceived that, according as the leaf-s lowered or raised, the slides are drawn outward or forced back, thereby obviv ating the necessity of adjusting said slides separately.

In addition to their functions as described, vthe rods cl serve as supports to the leaf.

Inside the desk the slides move vbetween guides e, and to reduce friction `are provided each with a roller, c', upon its inner end, while other smaller rollers are journaled tothe front of the deslLat z'.

Fig. 2 of -the drawing shows en -modification of this invention as applied to laterally-swing ing 'doors for pigeon-hole7 cases, &c. The vrod is projected from the side of the case, and prevents the' door from being swung too far back.

Having fully described my-invention, I claim as new, and desire to' secure by.Letters .Patent- 1. The automatically-moving slides C, in combination with the desk A and leaf B, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with a desk-leaf or door, of a slide, C, and pivoted connectingrod d, operating substantially. as shown and described. In testimonjr that I claim the foregoing I `have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of "June, 1874.
