ORCHARD HEATER.
Application filed January combustion of the smoke and gases proceeding from an'orchard heater or smudge pot may be effected, the device being so constructed that its constituent parts may be separated and telescoped to occupy small compass when the occasion for the use of the device has passed. I I
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the Although a preferred form of the inventionhas been delineated in the drawings, itwill be understood that a mechanic, working within the scope of what is claimed, may make such alterations and changes as his skill may suggest, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or placing the utility of the device in jeopardy.
The invention will behest understood when the following specification is read in connection with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section. a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts remaining in elevation; and Figure 2 is a detail enlarged from Figure 1.
In Figure 1 of the drawings. there is shown an orchard heater including a fire pot 1 comprising a body 2 surmounted bv a movable lid having a damper or the like, indicated at 4, and controlling the admission of air to the fire pot. The lid has a central upstanding circular collar 5.
The means for effecting a thorough combustion of the smoke and gases proceeding from the oil or other fuelburned in the pot 1, includes an inverted conical base 6,
' of circular'outline, having a sleeve 7 rest ing on the lid of the fire pot about the collar 5. The base 6 is perforated as at 8, throughout the major portion of its area,
the upper end of the base 6 being turned outwardly to form a depending circumferential flange 9. I
The device includes a frusto-conical cap 10 which is imperforate, the cap being provided, near to its lower end, with a circum- 21, 1925. Serial No. 3,810.
ferential, outwardly bowed head 11 forming an internal seat 12. The bead 11 is spaced far enough from the wider end of the cap 10, so that said end of the cap forms an apron 14 which, preferably, is inclined outwardly at a more pronounced angle than the slope ofthe cap 10 above the bead 11. The base 6 and the cap 10 are made of metal which is stiff enough to withstand a high degree of heat, but resilient enough so that the flange 9 of "the base 6 can he worked into seat 12 of the cap 10, as shown in the drawings. The cap 10 and the base 6 then are securely united, but, upon the F application of some considerable force, the
base and the cap ma-y be separated from each other, and, then, the base 6 may be telescoped into the cap 10, so as to occupy but little space. when the occasion for the use of the device has passed, the base, of course, being detached. from the lid of the fire pot 1. Owing to the fact that the apron 14 slants outwardly at a morepronounced angle than the slant of the cap 10, the insertion of the flange 9 into the seat 12 of the bead 11 is facilitated.
In practical operation. air enters the base 6 through the perforations 8, and in the base 6 and in the cap 10, a thorough com- 8 bustion of the gases and smoke proceeding from the fire pot 1 is effected. The result isthe production of a high degree of heat and a minimum loss of combustible material when the fire pot 1 is in operation.
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a frusto-conical cap communicating at its narrower end directly with the atmosphere, and 9 provided. with an internal seat, the wider end of the cap being formed by an apron leading to the seat, the apron slanting outwardly at a more pronounced angle than the'slant of the cap, and an'inverted conical base having its wider end detachably received in the seat, the apron facilitating the insertion of the'wider end of the base into the seat, and the base having perforations. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence'of two witnesses.
I OLE' G. OLSEN. Witnesses: E'ranr. V. HAMNER,
S. P. HILL.
