ANG-ELO CESAREO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GRAVE CANDLE.
Application filed J'u1y722, 1925.
This invention relates to grave` candles and I use this term grave candles in its broadestkscnse to include candles of the type which are used for religious purposes, as there are many creeds and sects which burn candles at the time of death, and while my invention is especially adapted for use at the grave it is also adapted for use in the house or place of worship.'
An obl'ect of thev invention is to provide a candle which will not be accidentally blown out by a draft of air nor can itbe extinguished by rain or other inclement weather.
It is a well known fact that many fires are caused by candles of this type, portions of drapery or clothing or other inflammable material coming in contact with the candle, and my device is constructed to prevent such accidents.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, illustrating my improved candle;
Figure 2 is a View in longitudinal section thereof;
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
1 represents a casing which is preferably circular in form and largest at its upper end and tapering toward its lower end where it joins with an integral extension 2 that may be of any desired shape but is preferably circular in cross section, and in the lower end of this extension 2 a sharp spike 3 may be secured, the upper end of this spike being rigid within a sleeve 4 fixed in the lower end of the extension 2. If the device is to be used within doors the spike can be removed and the extension attached to any ordinary support.
Within the casing 1 I locate a removable cup holder 5 which has a collar 6 thereon that fits within the narrower portion of the casing 1 and has an enlarged upper portion 7 to receive and seat a cup 8 which is preferably of colored translucent or transparent material.
This cup 8 supports a candle 9 vor suitable Serial No. 45,357.-
material with a wick 10 which functions as a candle. A glass or other transparent dome 11 is supported at the upper end of casing 1 and removably connected thereto. This dome 11 may have a metal ring 12 fixed thereto which fits snugly over an inwardly loffset flange 13 at the uper end of casing 1.
The dome 11 has an annular flange 14: at its lower edge fitting within a ring 12 so as to prevent the possibility of accidental displacement, it being understood of coiuse that there is a sufficiently tight juncture of the ring and the dome to hold the parts in normal position but to allow the dome to be replaced if broken.
The dome 11 has a semi-spherical closed upper end 15 and is provided with openings 16 below its upper end with outwardly projecting beads 17 around the openings to deflect water that might drip downwardly from the top of the dome. These openings 16 constitute Aoutlets for air and gas, and a free admission of air is provided by reason of the fact that the casing 1 is formed with relatively large openings 18 therein, as clearly shown in Figure 1. A perfect combustion is had because of the fact that air entering the openings 18 will pass upwardly around the cup 8 and escape through the openings 16. IVind and water cannot seriously affect the candle and hence the latter will burn under all conditions and there will be no danger of fire resulting from the use of the candle.
To ignite the candle, it is necessary to remove the dome 11 and ring 12 thereof, as these parts will move together, and after the candle is ignited and these parts replaced the candle will burn evenly.
`When the device is to be used at the grave, the spike 8 is forced into the ground and will then hold the candle in an upright position. Vhen the candle is to be used in the home or in a place of worship, the spike can be removed and the candle supported on any suitable bracket or other support.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the per end of the casing, a transparent dome spirit and scope of the appended claim. having a closed upper end and perfo-rated I claim: sides, and an annular flange at the lower end 10 A device of the character described, inof the dome located Within and under the '5- chiding` acasing, a cup holder removably ring` whereby the connection is made Waterlocavted in Jche casing and adapted to receive tight yetthe parte are removably connected, :1 candle cup therein, a ring tt-ing the up- ANGELO CESAREO.
