ORCHARD HEATER.

Be it vknown that HENRYF. CONGABLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, has invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Orchard Heaters,
of which the following is a specification.
. My invention is an, improved orchard heater.
The object of my invention is to provide a heater, in which the area over which combustion is taking place, is confined to a small space below the combustion chamber, thus effecting a great saving in fuel.
A further object is to provide a fresh air inlet means through the combustion chamber.
Further objects and advantages will be more specifically pointed out in the follow- Ling detailed description.
In the annexed drawing in which vmy invention is illustrated I have shown the pre- :ferred embodiment, but it may also be embodied in other forms, aind in this application I desire to cover my invention in vwhatever form it may be embodied.
Figure l is a transverse sectional view of my heater.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on rthe line 2 2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the air adjusting yoke.
Referring more patrticularly to the drawing, my heater colnprises a tank l, which has a cover 2, suitably secured thereto. A tube 3 is secured to the cover 2 and extends downwardly to adjacent the bottom of the tank 1. A conduit 4 extends downwardly a short distance into the tube 3, and a combustion chamber 5 is formed on the top of the conduit. The usual holes 6 are formed in the chamber 5 to admit air to support combustion. A light metal chimney 7 iits over the chamber 5 and provides the necessary draft. The conduit 4 is smaller in diameter than the tube 3 and has lugs 8 formed upon it which engage the tube, thus centering the conduit in said tube. An annular air passage 9 is thus formed between the conduit 4 and tube 3.
A tapered adjusting yoke 10 rests on the cover 2 and engages the lower edge of the chamber 5, by moving the yoke 10 inwardly, the chamber is raised above the cover 2, thus admitting the air into the passage 9, the amount of air being determined by the height of the chamber above the cover. A handle lljis secured to the yoke 10 amd extends through a guide l2, thus enabling the yoke to be easily adjusted as desired.
The oil 'is ignited in the tube 3, and sufficient air isjadmitted through the passage 9 to support partial combustion, the vaipors rise through the conduit 4 into theV chamber 5 wherecomplete combustion occurs. Combustion in the tankl is confined to the limited area within the tube 3 thus effecting a great saving in fuel.
It is easily seen that my invention may be alpplied to standard smudge pots now in use.
The pot becomes the tank 1 and the cover, tube, combustion chamber, etc. are simply placed over it, and an effective heater is thus obtained.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit extending into said tube, a combustion chamber positioned at the upper end of said conduit, said conduit being of smaller diameter than the tube to form an air passage, and means to adjust the combustion chamber above the cover to admit air into said air passage. 2. A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit extending into said tube, a combustion chamber positioned at the upper end of said conduit, said conduit being of smaller diameter than the tube to form an air passage, and a tapered yoke positioned between the cover and the bottom of the combustion chamber to adjust said chamber above said cover and admit air into said passage.
3. A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit extending into said tube, a combustion chamber positioned at the upper end of said conduit, said conduit being of smaller diameter than the tube to form an air passage, lugs formed on said conduit adapted to engage the tube thereby centering the conduit within the tube, and means to adjust the combustion chamber above the cover to admit air into said air passage.
4. A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit extending into said tube, a combustion chamber llO positioned at the upper end of said conduit, said conduit having an air passage formed adjacent thereto, and means to regulate said passage to admit the required amount of air to support partial combustion in said tube.

A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank and terminating a short distance from the bottom thereof, a conduit extendinginto said tube, said conduit being of smaller diameter than the tube, to form an air passage between the conduit and tube and means 'to regulate the amount of air passing thru said air passage into said tube.
6, A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit eXtentL inginto said tube and being` of smaller diameter than the tube, whereby an air passage is formed between the conduit and tube and means to regulate the amount of air passing thru said air passage into said tube, said means including a tapered yoke.
7. A heater comprising a tank, a cover on said tank, a tube secured to -said cover and extending into said tank, a conduit eX- tending into said tube, a combustion chamber positioned at the upper end of said conduit, said conduit being of smaller diameter than the tubeto form an air passage, ay tapered yoke positioned between the cover and the bottom of the combustion chamber to adjust said chamber above said cover and admit air into said passage, a handle for said yoke whereby the same may be operated and a guide for said handle.
