An object vof the invention is to provide a movable toy having figures thereon which are operated to simulate a life-like motiori 1 the figures beingoperable alternately an -continuously from the mechanism which propels the toy.

' A further object of thevinventionv is to provide a toy comprising alive stock car in which chickens are bemg transported, some of which have escaped and are feeding on the roof of the car, they bein operate by the mechanism to give a life-li re appearance to their feeding movements.

Referring toy the drawing in which one embodiment of my invention is illustrated;

Fig. 1 is a view in side .elevation of my improved toy, the operating mechanism being shown for driving the same and operating the figures thereon;

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 denotes a box car having sides and ends 6 and 7 respectively, between the former of which extend ythe axles 8 carrying wheels 9 which freely revolve and upon which the car travels. The ends of the axles 8 are journaled in extensions 10 of the sides 6 of the car, these extensions being painted to represent the journal boxes of freight cars.

A driving axle 8a mounted as are the axles 8 is offset as at 12 and provided on one end with a pinion 13 with which engages a driving gear 14 formed on one end of a spring drum 15 which is carried on a shaft 16 journaledv in the sides of the car. On this shaft, at the opposite end ofthe spring drum 15 is loosely mounted a ratchet wheel.y 17 to which one end of the spring 18, which encompasses the spring-drum 15, 1s attached. The other end of the spring is secured to the driving gear 14. A suitable pawl 19 i5 pivotally secured to the side of the car and 1n posltion to prevent any unwinding movement of the pawl. Two shafts 20 and 21 each carrying meshing gears 22 and pinions are journaled in the sides of the car ad- ]acent the spring drum, one vof the pinions 23 meshing with the driving gear 14. This arrangement acts as a drag and slows the mechanism so that the wheels 24 can propel `the car. I

Pivoted to one side of the car body as at 25 is al vertical lever 26, the lower end of which is offset and slotted as at 27 to receive the offset portion 12 of driving axle 8. When the latter revolves it causes a throw of the upper end of the lever 26. The upper end of this lever has passed therethrough loosely a rod 28 which 1s pivoted to the to 29 of the car at the center thereof throng` the medium of a loose pin 30. The rod 28 also passes through two spaced bars 30*l to which are pivoted as at 31 the figure supporting extensions 32, which are pivoted also in the topl of the car as at 33. The figures 34 of the chickens may be shown as small and large and are operated alternately to peck into a wooden bowl 35 of feed between them on the roof of the car, so that on one end of the car one chick will be down while the'otlier is up and the diagonally opposite chicks on the opposite side of the bowl will be respectively up and down.

These movements will, of course, be caused by the alternate reciprocation of the bars 30l through the action of lever 26, the latter of which will operate while the car is being propelled.

Thus I have provided a to which while moving will be operating gures carried thereby to provide an attraction which is life-like and amusing to children.

What I claim is 1. vA toy comprising a wheeled vehicle havinga body portion, a top for said body portion, figures pivoted in said top, extensions on said figures, parallel bars carried in said extensions, a rod paing transversely through said bars for operating the same, said rod being pivoted in said top between said bars, means for propellingsa-id vehicle, comprising a driven axle, a lever extending between said axle and said rod, and means on said axle for operating said lever whereby movement is imparted to said figures.

A toy comprising a frame made to represent a railroad car, figures pivoted on the top of said car, means for propelling said car, comprising a driven axle, bars to which said res are connected, a rod cpassing transversely'through .said bars an being pivoted in the top ofthe car, at a point between'said bars, a lever having one end associated with the axle and the other end with the rod and being adapted to operate the rod whereby a movement is imparted to said bars to cause simultaneous pivotal movement of said figures.

A toy comprising a frame made to represent a railroad car, figures pivotally associated with the top of said frame, a drivin mechanism flor ,propelling said tory, sai mechanism comprlsintg` a driven axle, a plurality-of horizontally disposed parallel bars in said frame and towhich said figures are connected, a pivoted rod passing transversely through said bars, and a pivoted lever connecting said driven axle and said rod whereby when the `toy is being propelled, said figures are caused to have a lifelike movement.
