ARTICLE FOR MAKING CIGARETTES.

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Article for Making Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a new article of manufacture for making cigarettes.

The object of the invention is to enable persons to readily and conveniently make their own cigarettes as desired, which will permit them to have the tobacco mixture to their own particular liking and at the same time have a cigarette as well formed as those made in factories.

To this end my invention comprises on the one part a holder for cigarette wrappers detachable therefrom and having expansible and inexpansible mouth pieces, the oppo site end of the body being closed to prevent the tobacco from passing out during the filling thereof and on the other part a casing having in one portion a tobacco com partment and attached filler comprising a tube and plunger and in the other portion holding means to retain the cigarette wrapper holders in place.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a plan view showing the casing in open position with the tobacco compartment and filler in one portion and the holder and formed cigarette wrappers in the other portion;

Figure 2 is a plan view of a plurality of formed cigarette wrappers mounted on interconnected holders;

Figure 3 is a side elevation of one of the holders with a plurality of wrappers mounted thereon;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the wrappers showing the expansible body with a relatively still, inexpansible mouth piece and closed lower end; and

Figure 5 is a view of a cigarette, particularly in section, showing the closed lower end of the wrapper.

In these drawings, the casing is comprised of two sections 1 and 2, hinged at 3. In the section 1 I have provided a tobacco compartment 4 and a filler device comprising a hollow tube 5 and a plunger 6. The plunger 6 has a head 7 on the end thereol and a spring ring 8 which lies against the end of the section 1 when the device is not in use. The head 7 is so formed that when the ring 8 is extended in line with the plunger to afford a ready means of operating the plunger, with one hand it will be maintained in such position until pushed back against the end of the casing.

In section 2 of the casing I have provided a member 9, cut-away as shown at 10. This member is adapted to serve the double purpose of retaining the supply of cigarette wrappers in the casing and afiording a compartment for matches which may be held in place by a spring member 11.

Referring now more particularly to the form-ed cigarette wrappers and the holders therefor, it will be seen that I have provided the wrappers with an eXpan-sible body 12 having a relatively stiff, inexpansible mouth piece 13 and a closed lower end, as shown at 14:. About midway of the lower closed end perforations 15 are provided for the purpose hereinafter set forth. As a convenient manner of supplying the wrappers I provide a holder 16 in the form of a card notched on either edge as shown at 17 for the purpose of connecting two of such holders to form in effect one continuous holder. By notching the holders on both edges they will be detachable for ready insertion in either half of the section 2. The advantage of making the holders of such size that it will require two of them to fill one section of the casing is that an ample supply of wrappers may always be on hand, as it will be seen that upon the exhaustion of the supply on one holder, another filled holder may be readily substituted therefor.

The formed wrappers with their closed ends perforated midway'of such closure are attached to the holder 16 in successive rows, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, preferably by pasting the extreme closed end thereto. The holders are then ready for insertion in the section 2 of the casing, the lower ends being slipped under the holding member 9. Of course, it will be understood that these holders may be made of any desired size and shaped to it the particular style of case in which it may he desired to place them.

In the use of the article a Wrapper is removed from the holder 16 by tearing the same along the perforations 15 and slipping the relatively stiff. mouth piece over the end of the tube 5. The tobacco in the compartment 4 is then guided through the tube and into the Wrapper by means of the plunger 6 which passes through the tobacco casing into the tube and thence into the Wrapper. The Wrapper with its inexpan sible, relatively stiff mouth piece and expansible body with closed end make the new article of manufacture a practical one from a commercial standpoint as Well as from the standpoint of utility. Heretofore such d vices have not been practical because no satisfactory Wrapper was available.

It Will be understood that I desire to comprehend ithin my invention such modifications as may be fairly embraced Within it, and as maybe found necessary in adapting it to various conditions in the art in the course of the application of the invention.

Having thus fully. described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An article of manufacture comprising a Wrapper for cigarettes having an expansible body and a relatively short inexpansible mouth piece.

2. An article of manufacture comprising a Wrapper for cigarettes having an expansible body With its lower end closed and a relatively short inexpansible mouth piece adapted to be placed over a tube for the insertion of tobacco.

3. As an article of manufacture, a holder comprising a card adapt-ed to receive a plurality of flu-med cigarette Wrappers mounted thereon in series, and nieansfor readily removing a wrapper from said holder.
