Patented July 22, 1930 eus'rav NEWMAN, or oAnLAnn, oni inonlvra CIGARETTE-MAKING nnvion Application filed August 16, 1929.. Serial No. 386,333.
This invention relates to improvements in cigarette making devices.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a device which may be attached to an ordinary tobacco bag or tobacco box for the purpose of delivering the quantity of tobacco to the cigarette paper.
Another object is to produce a device which is compact and one which will not take up an unnecessary amount of room in the pockets. A further object is to produce. a device of this character which is economical to manufacture.
A still further object is to provide a device 5 which will not become clogged with use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description. In the accompanying drawings forming an a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a side elevation of a tobacco bag having my invention applied thereto, and showing cross section,
Figure II is a plan view of a cigarette paper, and
Figure III is an enlarged detail view of the expansible pusher rod.
In the making of hand rolled cigarettes it is common to employ a strip of paper onto which tobacco is poured and after which the same is rolled. This procedure is one in which a large amount of tobacco is spilled and oftentimes a very poorly rounded cigarette is made, being only partially filled with tobacco. 1
Applicant has therefore produced a device wherein papers are formed into tubular 4o stripsyeach tubular strip being sealed at one end, the result being that this tubular strip of paper forms the paper covering of the cigarette when the same is filled with tobacco.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a tobacco container which may be a bag, can or any other suitable receptacle. In the present instance I have shown a bag having a draw string 6 through the medium of which the bag is gathered around the flange 7 of my device. My device consists primarily of a hollow chamber 8 which is formed by the shell 9 secured to the flange 7. This shell 9 has an inwardly projecting tubular member 11 and an outwardly projecting tubular member 12.
The member 11 serves a guide for a pusher rod 18 while the tubular member 12 has its outer extremity beveled as shown at 14C and serves to push the cigarette paper 16. The beveled feature assists in threading the paper onto the tubular member.
Referring to Figure II it will be noted that the paper 16 is lapped and sealed as at 17 so as to form a tubular structure and one end is sealed as shown at 18. The pusher rod 7 shown in Figure III is preferably a hollow tube 13 within which spring arms 21 and 22 are adapted to be moved. A head 23 is connected to spring arms and serves to move the pusher rod back and forth as indicated in dotted lines in Figure I.
The operation of my device is as follows Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in Figure I and the cigarette paper 16 has been placed upon the tubular member 12, tobacco from the receptacle 5 will flow in the chamber 8 and by now pushing the pusher rod downwardly to the position shown in dotted lines, the tobacco will be forced into the cigarette paper. By manipulating the rod two or three times, suilicient tobacco will be forced into the paper to make a well formed cigarette. the user desire to extend the pusher rod for the purpose of pushing the tobacco further into the paper, he may do so by pulling out on the head 23 as illustrated in Figure III. When the device is not in use the parts are in dotted line position of Figure I, which prevents any tobacco from spilling through the tubular member 12.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from Should the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 2-- In a device of the character described, a chamber adapted to be attached to a receptacle and to receive a commodity from said receptacle, a tubular member extending from said receptacle, a tubular member extending into said receptacle, a pusher element positioned in said second mentioned tubular member and adapted to project through said chamber into said first mentioned tubular member, and means for elongating said pusher element for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GUSTAV NEWMAN.
