Be it kno y that I, LOUIS FRIEDBERG, a citizen of the -United States, residing at Philadelphia, i`n the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigarette- Makers, of which the followingl is a speciication.

' The invention relates to tobacco, and more cigarettes.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose abody or trough 10, substantially channel shaped and formed 'at one end with a tubular pointed-holder 11 for a tube or cartridge 12, the holder 11 at its inner end being open to the trough 10. A pusher and guide 13 yis provided and consists more particularly of a handled rod 14 and stem 15, curved in cross-section, with the ystem extended beyond one end of the rod when in use and-'preferably pointed onitsjfV said stem, however, being hingedattgloso that it can be swung backward 4to'lie upon the rod 14 when not in use.

A top or cover 16 is adapted to lie upon the trough 10 and press down the tobacco therein, said top having' a transversely curved underface 17 and formed with guideways 18 lying upon the edges of the trough.

In the use of the device the tube or cartridge, 1Q of paper or the like is placed upon the holder 11 withthe holder extending into yan end of the tube. The loose tobacco is now arranged in the trough 10 and the stem 15 is placed in the troughito lie upon the tobacco. The top or cover isnow arranged in position and pressure is then exerted against the handle end of the pusher, thus advancing the stem into the tube 12 and moving the inner end 19 of the rod into the trough to push thev tobacco forwardly into the tube. The handle of-the pusher is indicated by the numeral 20 and limits the inward movement of the pusher by abutting against the trough 10. It will be clearly seen that the stem, acting as a guide will help to shape and form the tobacco so that it can enter the tube 12 through the holder 11 and also guide the tobacco into the tube. The tube now filled with tobacco, is removed from the holder and is ready to be smoked, the same being a complete cigarette.

With the device of the character described the tobacco will be uniformly advanced into the tube and will not bunch up therein, vand furthermore by providing the stem 15 forming the guide, the tube will be held stiff and prevented from tearing as the tobacco advances into the latter. Y i

In Figs. 5 and 6 I disclose a slightly modi* fied form of my device, and in which the trough indicated by the numeral 10, has its cover or top 16a and the pusher and guide 13a made in one unit, as will be clearly perceived. The'operation of the modified form is substantially the same as the operation of the preferred form, the cover or top 16a in the former, however, being advanced )along and in the trough 10a with the pusher and guide.

Having described my invention, I claim A cigarette maker comprising a body grooved to provide a recess having an arcuate bottom and straight sides, said member being adapted to 'receive and retain tobacco when in a horizontal position with the open .arcuate bottom of the recess to form a substantially cylindrical bore, the sides ofthe cover laterally of said rib engaging the top edges of said body for limiting the projecvtion of said rib thereinto, a tubular shell 10 supporting member secured upon one end of said body coaxially with thev bore therein,

and a pusher disposed Within said bore and movable to discharge tobacco compressed Within said bore through said tubular mem- 15 ber into a shell supported thereon.
