Be it known that I, PHILIP M. Brouno,V a citizen of Italy (having taken ont first United States citizenship papers), and' a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Pen'holder and Frotector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pen holders and protectors and has for anobject to provide Yan improved construction wherein the pen may be adjusted to a writing position and to a protected or reserved position whereby the point cannot be engaged by the hand or cannot vengage the clothes when the article is placed in thepocket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pen holder wherein the pen is mounted in a sliding member capable of adjustment to two positions, the sliding structure y being associated with a protecting plate capable of vcovering the end of .the pen when not in writing position.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pen holder, disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Figure 1 with one end broken away in vertical section `for illustrating the construction.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view hrcgugh Figure 2, approximately on line o-wo. v
Figure 4- :is a view similar Vto Figure 1 but showing the pen and associated parts in their retracted position.
`referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a handle of any desired kind provided with a hollow eX- tension 2 which may be of the same material as the handle or may be made of other material and secured in place. As shown in the drawing, the extension 2 is made integ-ral with the handle 1 and vfits inthe hollow member 2. Preferably the front plate 4 is secured to the tubular guard 3. The plate 4 does not cover the entire end of the tubular guard 3 but leaves the upper part exposed whereby. the pen 5 may freely move back and forth over the plate 1l. rlhis pen is held in place by the resilient action of the overlapping sections of the pen sleeve 6.
This sleeve is formed of a thin piece of metal coiled on itself so as to provide a body 7 as shown in Figure 3 and an underlapping section 7 whereby the pen 5 may be resiliently gripped therebetween.
By simply wrapping a piece of sheet metal in this way to form a tubular member, a simple but effective structure is presented whereby the pen 5 is firmly gripped but may be readily removed and re-applied Vat any time. The pen sleeve 6 at the inner end is rigidly secured to a cap 8 by solder or other desired means, said cap sliding on the hollow member` 2. This cap is preferably' provided with a bead 9 whereby it may be readily grasped and moved back and forth for reciprocating the pen sleeve 6. Inorder that the pen sleeve G and, consequently, the pen 5, may be properly positioned or centered, the cap 8 is provided ywith a V- shaped extension 10 fit-ting into a similar shaped notch 11 as illustrated in Figure. 1. This will prevent any accidental rotation of the parts when the pen is exposed as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Then it is desired to place the device in thepocket or some other desired place, the cap 8 is grasped and pulled to the position shown in Figure 1. This action will cause the pen sleeve 6 to retract the pen 5 so that Vit will be protected by the tubular guard 3 and also the clothes will be protected against the pen in case the device is placed in the pocket.' The pen may be quickly and easily moved to its outer position by forcing the cap 8 back to the position shown in Figure 1.
What I claim is 1. A pen holder and protector, comprising a handle, a tubular member' extending from one end of the handle, a tubular pen guard secured to the. front end of said tubular member and surrounding the tubular member for an appreciable part of its length, a pen sleeve surrounding said tubular member and positioned to Yreciprocate in said guard, said sleeve having an overlapping portion presenting clamping members for a pen, and a hand operated member connected to one end of said pen sleeve, said hand operated member being formed with means readily grasped whereby the sleeve and pen carried thereby may be moved so that the pen will be beneath the pen guard when the parts are in one position and projecting therefrom When the parts are in a second position.
2. A pen holder and protector, comprising a body having a forwardly extending portion, a gnard connected With said forwardly extending portion, said guard be- :ig formed With a notch at one end, a pen leceiving member carried by said forwardly yxxtending portion, a cap Secured to said pen receiving member, said cap having an an- 10
