To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful' Dispensing Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means whereby the flow of ay liquid from a container may be regulated at the will of an operator between a small screen and a very slow drop-by-drop dispensation.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that sort to which the invention appertains.
Although a preferred form has been shown in the drawings, a mechanic, working within the scope of what is claimed, may make changes without departing` from the spirit of the invention.

The numeral 1 marks a bottle or other receptacle into whichis inserted a main stopper 2, fashioned from cork, rubber or any other suitable material. The stopper 2 has a longitudinal bore 3 across which extends a retainer 4, in the form of al pin, held frictionall in the stopper 2, the stopper 2 generally eing inserted far enough into the receptacle 1, as shown in Figure 2, so that the receptacle holds the retainer in place, should the retainer tend to work endwise.
A valve 5, in the form of a rod, is slidable in the bore 3 of the main stopper 2 but is held frictionally therein, so that Vthe valve cannot slide excepting when it is manipulated by an operator. To facilitate the sliding of the valve, the same may be provided with oppositely disposed seats 6 adapted to receive the thumb and finger nails of the person using the device. To facilitate the dripping of the liquid olf the valve 5, the valve may be provided with a pointed outer end 7. The valve 5 has a flattened or reduced inner end 8, having parallel surfaces 9 merging into diverging surfaces l0. The end 8 has an elongated opening 11 receiving the retainer 4, the retainer serving to limit the outward movement of the valve 5.
An auxiliary stopper 12 is seated in the receptacle 1, `inwardly of the main stopper 2, the auxiliary stopper having a passage14 in which is mounted a thimble 15 facilitating the flow of liquid, the thimble being provided with a flange 16 engaging the outer end of the auxiliary stopper 12. The main stopper 2 is removable independently of the auxiliary stopper 12.
When the valve 5 is pushed inwardly as far as it will go, the bore 3 of the main stopper 2 is closed, and no liquid will flow from the receptacle l. When the valve 5 is pulled outwardly as far as it will go, tho reduced end 8 of the valve 5 closes the bore 3 but partially, and a somewhat copious drop-by-drop supply of liquid is afforded. By disposing the valve 5 in intermediate positions, so that more or less of the diverging surfaces 10 of the valve lie beyond the end surface 17 of the main stopper 2, the flow may be regulated between the maximum drop-by-drop supply and the minimum drop-by-drop supply which occurs just before the valve 5, as it is pushed inwardly, closes: the bore 3 of the stopper 2 completely.
The main stopper 2 may be withdrawn, the auxiliary stopper 12 remaining in the receptacle, and, then, a small stream of liquid may be shot through the thimble 15, the device ordinarily being operated by shaking the receptacle when the main stopper 2 is in place, or when the main stopper is removed.
What is claimed is 1. In a device ofthe class described, a
stopper having a bore, a valve slidable in thebore, the valve comprising a part which closes the bore, and a reduced end which closes the bore but partially when the valve is partly withdrawn, the reduced end of the valve having an elongated slot, and a pin engaged at its ends with the stopper and passing through the slot of the valve. In a device ofthe class described, a stopper having a'cylindrical bore, a valve slidable in the bore, the valve comprising a cylindrical part which closes the bore, and a reduced end which closes the bore but partially when the valve is partly withdrawn, the valve being provided with an inclined lll and extended Within thefbore, and cool erating` with the reducedr end of the vulve, 'for limiting thc sliding movement of the valve in opposite directions.
