JOHN V. FAR-LEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PIPE HANGER.
Application filed February 25, 1924.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN lV. FARLEY. a citizen oit' the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Hangers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention aims to provide an eXtremely simple and inexpensive, yet an eliective pipe hanger, constructed to permit slioht longitudinal movement of the pipe with respect to the hange, without danger ot injuring any insulating covering with which the pipe may be provided.
Another object is to associate a return pipe hanger with the main hanger, in a novel manner.
lilith the foregoing in view, the invention resides lin the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation.
In the drawing above brieiiy described, the numerals l designate a pair ot metal side bars disposed vertically and prei-erably having their upper end portions odset inwardly as indicated at 2, the upper extremities of these oi'iset portions, beingl bent inwardly to provide overlapping ears 3 having alined openings s'. to receive a suspend ing bolt or the like 5. By having` the two thicknesses ot metal, through which the bolt or the like 5 passes, the hanger is reinforced at this point ot strain.
lilfitening between the lower ends oit the side bars l, I have shown a. short sleeve G which abuts the inner siees o1 said bars, and a bolt G is passed through openings 7 in these bars and through the sleeve 6 to tightlyV hold the bars in contact with the sleeve. lotatably mounted upon the sleeve G, which constitutes a shaft member I have illustrated a pair of substantially conical rollers S whose peripheries are suitably curved for engagement with a pipe 9 or with a covering Serial No. 695,024.
around a pipe. Spacing sleeves l0 surround the sleeve 6 between the rollers 8 and the side bars l and these sleeves may be of any desired length, according to the diameter of the pipe to be supported.
Between the rollers 8, I prefer to mount a return pipe hanger upon the sleeve 6. rThis. hanger is shown in the form of a substantially U-shaped clip ll having the upper ends of its arms secured by a bolt l2 to the depending ends of a metal strap 13 which is bent around the sleeve- 6, said strap 18 being given a quarter twist as shown. In addition to constituting an auxiliary pipe hanger, it will be seen that the strap 13 spaces the rollers 8 against inward movement toward each other before application to a pipe.
Excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed and they will permit any necessary amount of longitudinal move ment of the pipe, with respect to the hanger, and due -to the formation of the rollers S and the tact that they may be spaced proper distances apart, there is no danger of injuring any insulating covering with which the pipe may be provided.
I claim:
l. A pipe hanger comprising a pair ot vertically disposed Side bars, a spacing sleeve extending between and abutting the lower ends of said side bars, a bolt passing through said side bars and sleeve and holding the former tightly against the latter, a pair of separate rollers rotatably mounted on said sleeve, a pair of additional spacing sleeves surrounding the firstnamed sleeve between said rollers and said side bars, anoL another spacer between said rollers.
2. A pipe hanger comprising a horizontal shaft member and means for supporting the same, apair of independently rotatable spaced rollers rotatably surrounding said shaft member, means holding said rollers against spreading, and a lspa-cer on said shaft member between said rollers serving to hold the latter against movement toward each other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto athxed my signature.
JOHN w. raster.
