HANGER FOR- TROLLEY WIRES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June 9, 1924. Serial No. 718,9 70.
ToaZZ whom it may concern: I I
Be it known that I, -WINroRD GLADSTONE MILNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of I-Iam'lton, county of BIIUVOItlI, Province of Ontario, Dominion ofCanada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Trolley Wires and the like, for which thefollowing is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hangers for trolley wires and the like, such for instance as catenary hangers and the object of the invention is to provide a stronger and more durable and reliable hanger than hitherto, and whichwill be of simple and inexpensive construction.
lWIy invention consists of a wire gripping ear and a novel form of ear support associated therewith, all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
F g. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of an arrow.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, like characters of refercnce indicate corresponding parts in the various views.
My invention conssts of a wire gripping car 1 and an ear support 2.
The ear 1 comprises the opposed side plates 3, which are separated at their upper edges by a spacing element 4.
The lower edges of the plates 3 are formed into the opposed wire gripping jaws 5 adapted to engage and grip the wire 6 therebetween.
The top of the ear 1 is provided with an orifice 7 therethrough, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
A bolt 8 extends transversely through the ear 1 intermediately thereof and carries a nut 9.
The ear support 2 is formed from a rod having its lower end bent back upon itself to form an eye 10, this backwardly bent end of the rod projecting upwardly and the extremity thereof formed into a hooked portion 11, which projects upwardly through the orifice 7.
The construct'on and operation of my invention is as follows The lower end of the ear support 2 is bent back upon itself as shown in the drawings. V
The eye ,10 is. then passed inwardly through the orifice 7 in the top of theear and the bolt 8 passed through the e'arand through the eye 10.
Upon tightening the nut 9, the sides ofthejear are drawn inwardly and the wire 6 1s firmly grippedbetween the jaws 5.
In this assembled posit on the hooked por tion 11 projects upwardly through the ori Hitherto considerable troublelias been ex; perienced in trolley wire hangers of this type due to the ear support pulling away from the ear and it has been with a View of overcoming this that I have devised my. invention.
When the trolley wire becomes displaced out of its normal line, the ear support 1 is subjected to very severe bending strain,
vention by having the free end 11 of the rod 2 project back upwardly through the orifice .7 in the car, after the rod has been bent about the bolt 8 to form the eye 10. In this way the engagement of the two portions of the rod 2 (that is the main body of the rod and the end 11) Within the orifice 7, positively prevents the straightenng out of the eye 10 and the consequent disengagement of the ear support- 2 from the 'ear 1.
The hooked portion 11 is bent outwardly sothat it will engage the top of theear inimediately any straightening out deformation of the support 2 takes place. i
It has been found by actual test that when the ear support 2 is formed from quarter inch rod, this red will break before the end 11 will straighten out over the bolt 8.
Various modifications may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the claims and therefore the exact form shown is to be taken as illustrative only and not in a limitingsense.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have devised improvements in devices of the class mentioned, which should prove of great value.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an ear, comprising opposed wire gripping jaws and a bolt mounted in the ear and operatively coacting with the jaws, of an ear support comprising a rod extending downwardly and bent backwardly upon itself about the aforesaid bolt, and means formed on the ear and coacting with the backwardly bent portion of the rod.
, for preventing the straightening out of said bent portion.
2. In a device of the class describech, the combination with a wire gripping ear comprising opposed spaced apart side plates separated at their top edges by a spacing element and adapted to grip a wire between their lower edges, and a boltextending through said plates intermediately thereof,
of an ear support comprising a rod extend ing downwardly between said opposed side plates through an orifice in the top of the ear, the end of said rod bent baokwardly upon itself about the aforesaid bolt and projecting upwardly through the orificein the top of the ear.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wire gripping ear comprising opposed spaced apart side plates separated at their top edges by a spacing element and adapted to grip a wire between their lower edges, and a bolt extending through said plates intermediately thereof, of an ear support comprising a rod extending downwardly between said opposed side plates through an orifice in the top of the ear the end of said rod bent backwardly upon itself about the aforesaid bolt and projecting upwardly through the orifice in the top of the ear, the extremity of said rod bent to form a hooked portion adapted to engage the top of the ear.
4. In a device of the class described, the
combination with an ear comprising opposed
