Description

June'9, 1925. I 1,540,989 J. T. HIGGINS HAIR CLEANING DEVICE Filed Feb. 1924 Patented June 9,
UNITED STATES lit) y 1,540,989 PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. HIGGINS, O'F BURLINGTON, NORTH ROBERT 1?. ROBINSON, OF FOREST CITY,
CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NORTH CAROLINA.
HAIR-CLEANING- DEVICE.
10 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Jorm T. Hiccms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, inthe county of Alamance and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Hair-Cleaning Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair cleaning devices especially designed for use in barber shops.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character for cleaning the hair of the head and which is constructed so as to prevent entanglement of the hair with the brush and which may be readily disassembled for cleaning of the parts and quickly assembled for use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a brush constructed in accordance with this invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated a brush 1 is shown circular in cross section and composed of line bristles with a core extending centrally therethrough and terminating at its ends in shanks or spindles 2 and 3, the spindle 2 being longer than spindle 8.
A hollow handle t has a bearing 5 thread ed in one end thereof said bearing having a bore extending longitudinally theretlncnrgh for the passage of the brush spindle 2. This bearing 5 has a head 6 at one end which.
abuts the inner end of the handle l. A tlexible shaft 7 of ordinary construction enters the other end of the handle 4 and is connected with the spindle 2 preferably being socketed to receive the angular end of said spindle. This shaft 7 is secured in the handle against accidental withdrawal by a set screw 8.
Elongated independent plates 10 and 11 are arranged diametrically opposite each Application filed February 12, 1924. Serial No. 692,312.
other on opposite sides of the brush and have their ends inwardly offset as shown at 12. These independent plates which are laterally spaced permit the brush to be used at opposite sides thereof the bristles extending between these plates at these points.
A collar or bearing member 9 is mounted on the short spindle 3 of the brush and is secured in position by set screws 13 passing through the outer ends of plates 10 and 11 the other ends of said plates being secured to the head 6 of the bearing 5 by set screws ll. These plates 10 and 11 are designed to prevent the hair being cleaned from becoming entangled with the brush.
The flexible driving'shaft 7 is designed to rotate the spindle 2 and brush 1 which latter is designed to be guided over the head of the person whose hair is being cleansed. The handle 4 is used to manipulate the brush.
It will be readily seen that by loosening the screws 8, 13 and 14 the brush may be readily taken apart for cleaning or other purposes and may be quickly reassembled for use.
I claim 1.. A hair cleaning device comprising a hollow handle, a brush having a spindle rotatably mounted. within said handle, means for connection with said spindle to rotate said brush, and oppositely disposed independent laterally spaced guard plates for said brush to prevent tangling of the hair therewith and to permit use of the brush between said plates.
2. A hair cleaning device comprising a hollow handle, a bearing threaded in one end of said handle, a brush having a spindle extending through said bearing into said handle, means connected svith the spindle for rotating said brush, oppositely disposed laterally spaced independent guard plates arranged on opposite sides of said brush and having inwardly ollset ends those at one end being connected with said bearing, a spindle at the other end of the brush with which the other ends of said plates are connected.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
- JOHN T. HIGGINS.
