Application led January 12, 1925. Serial No. 1,924.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS SwANN SMiTH, a citizen kof the United States, residing at Edmond, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented a certain new and useful Invention in Alarms, of which the following is a specilication, referenee being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to alarms for general use, and purpose, and may, in some cases be applied to the locks of doors, so that the knob shank or bar may be the assisting means for giving the alarm.
It often happens that it is not desirable to have the door opened without permission, and often again folks are surprised when the door is opened by one'who has not been invited so to do. lt is to these conditions that the invention is especially directed.Y
On the sheet of drawings, accompanying n and forming a part of the specification, the figure shows the invention in elevation, with parts being broken away to show the dcta-ils of construction.
Against this plate 2 and on the bar 4 is applied a ring` 6 having 4a lug 7, the latter being sufficiently thin to be flexible. To the plate 2 as at near the base thereof is a plate 8, the end really of a sheet steel or metal shank 9 which is bent upon itself as at 11, so that the sheet metal shank will stand endwise looking at the drawing, and this element 9 branches to forks 12 and 13, for the purpose of carrying movably mounted triggers 14 and 15, pivoted to the forks 12 and 13 at 16 and 17 and these triggers' have their upper faced cams 18 and 19 made in such manner that when the parts are in normal position, these faces are in position to co-operate with the edges of the lug 7, as the same swings laterally, as the knob bolt is turned. This movement is not very great but the arrangement of the triggers, and the forks is' such that the relative movement throughout the length of the shank 9 becomes much greater. Integrally formed with the shank, are lateral arms 20 and 21 lhaving their free ends formed into olappers 22v and 23, for hammering at the periphery of a bell 24, shown partly broken away.
This shank 9 is supposed to be constructed Y erned by pins 27 and 28 and the free end of which bar is formed in any suitable manner into a cam head for riding behind the shank 8 and forcing the latter outwardly and away from the action of the lug 7, when it isl desired to not have the bell ring.
The parts '8, 9, 12, 13,72() and 21 will be formed preferably of one piece at one stamping, although this is not confining the invention to that method of construction.
The operation is as follows:
AA slight turn of the bar 4, causes in either direction, the lug 7 to take against the face 18 or 19, as the case may be of the triggers 14 or 15. These being fixed against outward movement from the forks, will cause the shank to sway in either direction, as the lug 7 passes by. This will cause the clappers 22 and 23 alternately to strike the inner edge of the bell 24. In order to allow the element 7 to return to normal position, by the action of the spring residing in the lock, the triggers may move on their pivot toward the centre or each other and as the lug 7 comes back automatically either trigger is depressed, and goes back to place by gravity the same being slightly weighted as seen.
Having thus described this' invention l claim:
In combination with a lock and the knob bolt thereof, a ring, a lug thereon, the former being on the bolt and both the ring and lug turning therewith, a flexible elongated shank, a plate upon which the flexible elongated shank is disposed, and which surrounds the knob bolt, forks radiating from the upper end of said shank, triggers on said forks to co-operate with the lug when the knob bolt is turned, lateral levers con nected to the spring actuated shank and operated thereby to freely ring a bell, a bell, andmeans so cooperating with the shank that the bell will notk ring at will,
2. In combination With a plate to be Secured in place and having an opening, a knob bolt to pass through said opening, a flexible shank secured to the plate, extending 5 flexibly upward, yarins carried laterally of the shank intermediately of the point of union with the plate and its free enel7 bell olappers on the arms,va bell, triggers carried at the upper free end of the shank for operating the olappers, and means to operate 10 the triggers and ring the bell.
In testimony whereof I have -Qigned my Illle.
T.l SWANN SMITH.
