BURGLAR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters P Application filed May 28, 1888. Serial No. 275.352.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. SOHUIRMANN, of Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in burglar-alarms, the object of the same being to provide an alarm of detonating character, by means of which the same may be automatically set off when a door or window to which it is applied is opened or raised.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.
With these ends in View my invention consists in Certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully describcd, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the alarm with one of the side plates removed; Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
1 represents a side plate of the alarm, in which is journaled the shaft 2, the opposite end ot' the same being journaled in the plate 3. To the shaft 2 is rigidly secured the hammer 4, which passes through the elonbetween the plates 1 and 3. The rat-trap spring 7 surrounds the shaft and acts upon the hammer, the center of said spring forming a loop, in which rests the hammer 4t. The free ends 8 of the spring are secured in the notches 9 and 10, formed in the bands and plates, respectively.
The end of the shaft 2 is provided with the slot11, in which is pivoted the lever 12, the

same having the curved arm 13 extending inwardly, so that when the lever is set the same will be in contact with the door. The cartridgeeholder 14 is formed on the casing 6,and I is provided with the perforation 15 to receive the cartridge, which is preferably a blank one.
Vhen in use,the alarm is secured on a door, as shown, and the lever is secured against the tension of the spring on the catch 16. It will be seen that when the door is opened the lever will be released from the catch, thereby freeing the trigger, which will fly down upon the cartridge and explode the same.
By the use of a triangular piece of metal the alarm can efficiently be applied to a window.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a burglar-alarm having a shaft journaled therein, a hammer secured to said shaft, and a spring secured to the shaft and engaging the hammer, of alever pivoted to the end of said shaft, and a catch located on the alarm to engage the lever and retain the same against the tension of t-he spring, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the burglarlalarm provided with the shaft 2, and the spring 7, embracing the shaft and having its free ends secured to the plate and the loop thereof engaging the hammer 4, of a lever,12,pivoted to the shaft, and a catch, 16, for securing the same, and a cartridgeholder in line with the hammer, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN G. SCHUIRMANN.
