T. Fe WILSON'. Burglar Alarm Bolt.

Umane STATES PATENT Ormea..
THEODORE F. WILSON, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AS- SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO E. K. BUCHANAN, OF SAME PLACE.
BURG LAR-ALARM BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 242,574, dated .Tune '7, 1881.
Application filed April 23, 1881.
1' o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEonoRE F. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain Improvements in Burglar- Alarm Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and gures marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain improvements in burglar-alarms, and it has for its objects to provide a bolt for a door or window,
which may be so set that when the door or window is partially opened or tampered with the bolt will be automatically thrown forward, exploding a cap or cartridge to give an alarm, and at the same time eng-aging a fastening secured to the jamb or frame of the door or window, effectually securing said door or window. These objects I attain by the mechanism and devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view ofm y improved alarm-bolt and the door jamb or frame and its connections; and Fig. 2, a view of the bolt-casing with the covering-plate removed, showing the spring for projecting the bolt. Fig. 3 represents a detached view of the cover of the bolt-casing, and Fig. 4 a modification ofthe adjustable plate for engaging the bolt.
The letter A indicates the bolt-casing, which is constructed of cast metal with perforated lugs B, by means of which it can be fastened to the door.
The letter C indicates a reciprocating bolt adapted to move longitudinally in the casing. The said bolt is held in and returned to a normal position by means of a spring, D. The rear of the bolt is provided with a head, E, and hammer F, and the casing with a recess, G, for the reception of a cap or cartridge. The said rear end of the bolt is also constructed with a thumb-button, H, by means of which it can be drawn back for the purpose of settingit. The
(Model.)
forward end of the bolt projects beyond the forward end of the bolt-casing, as indicated in the drawings.
The letter I indicates a plate which is secured to the door jamb or frame, and K an adjustable metallic plate secured thereto. The said plate is provided with an aperture, L, through which the forward end of the bolt is adapted to pass. The said plate K is swiveled or otherwise attached to the plate I, so that it can be arranged to obstruct the bolt and hold it back when properly set, or be thrown back, so as not to interfere with it.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The bolt-casin g being properly secured to the door, and the plate I to the door-jamb to set the bolt, the plate K is thrown up, so as to form a bearing for the forward end ofthe bolt,-
this bolt having been properly drawn back, so that its forward end will rest against the said adjustable plate in position to strike into the aperture therein when it is attempted to open the door, permitting the bolt to be suddenly thrown forward, exploding the cap or cartridge, and at the same time securely bolting the door.
The casin g may be provided with a series of apertures, as indicated in the drawings, to permit the escape of gases developed by the explosion of the cap or cartridge, and prevent injury to the device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with the plate A, provided with perforated lugs B, and a receptacle, G, for a cartridge, the bolt C, having a projecting' forward end and a rear thumb-button, H, carrying a hammer, F, the spring D, and the adjustable plate K, the whole being adapted to be arranged substantially as and for the purposes specified. i
In testimony whereofI affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
THEO. F. WILSON.
