Description

June 5- R. J. BEATTY CASKET CARRIAGE ATTACHMENT Filed Dec. 16, 1924 Patented June 2, I925.
UNITED STATES;
ROBERT JAS. BEA'ITY, OF DODGE CENTER, MINNESOTA.
GASKET-CARRIAGE ATTACHMENT.
Application filed December 16, 1924. Serial No. 756,257.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Roi-nun Janus inf-wry, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dodge Center, in the county of Dodge and i tate of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket-Carriage Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This iDTEDtlOIl relates to an attachment for casket carriages, and has for its prin cipal object to provide a simple and etlicient means for facilitating the proper positioning of a casket, on the carriage.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment which is adapted to be associated with the casket carriages now universally in use, for the purpose of preventing the accidental displacement of the casket from the carriage, during the movement of the carriage with the casket thereon, down an inclined surface.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the above mentioned character, which may be readily and easily swung into an inoperative position, when the carriage is folded, so as to permit the latter to be stored away, without occupying any considerable amount of space.
A still further object is to provide an attachment of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, in expensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this in vention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of. this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a well known type of casket carriage, showing my attachment associated with the corner posts thereof, and
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the posts, further illustrating the attachment associated therewith.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a casket carriage, which may be of any well known construction, the same being preferably of the folding type, and further including the usual corner posts 2. As the construction of the carriage forms no important part of the present invention, a further detailed description thereof is not thought necessary. An arm designated generally by the numeral 3 is ro-- tatably supported at its inner end on the upper end of each of the corner posts, as illustrated at 9:. Each of the arms 3 includes a plurality of hinge sections 5, the hinged connections being illustrated at 6. The purpose of this construction is to permit each of the arms to be folded up, when not in use. A sleeve 7is detachably and adjustably supported on the outer end of the outermost 'section of each arm 3, a set screw 8 being provided for the purpose of holding each of the sleeves against accident tal displacement from the outer end of each of the arms and further holding the sleeves in their proper adjusted positions. An upstanding foot- 9 is formed on the outer end of each of the sleeves, as more clearly illustrated in Figure 2. n
A shorterarm 1Q is also rotatably supported on the upper portion of each of the corner posts 2 of the carriage 1, and the inner end of each of the shorter arms is disposed below the inner ends of the respective longer arms 3, as illustrated at 10. It is of course to be understood that any suitable means may be provided for preventing the vertical movement of the inner ends of the arms on the corner posts of the carriage. A bar 11 has an upstandiug foot 12, formed on the outer end thereof. A series of spaced openings 13 are arranged in the bar and a suitable set screw 14 is adapted to extend through one of the openings and through a registering opening provided in the outer end of each of the shorter arms 10, whereby the bar and foot may be adjustably supported on the outer end of each of the shorter arms. As is clearly illustrated in Figure 2, the bar and foot of each short arm 10 is disposed in the position shown in dotted lines, when not in use.
When in an operative position, the longer arm 3 extends outwardly from the carriage at the ends thereof, while the shorter arms are disposed laterally, at substantially right angles to the longer arm. The arrangement of the arms in this manner, enables the casket to be placed in proper position on the carriage, and furthermore, the upstanding feet 9 will engage the respective ends of the casket, while the upstanding feet 12 w'i'li inwardly adjacent the sides of the carriage,
so as not to occupy any considerable amount of space, and yet permit the carriage to be folded or collapsed, in its usual manner.
The provision of an attachment of the above mentioned character, enables the same to be easily and readily secured in position on the corner post of a casket carriage of the type now universally in use, and will, atall times, be positive and efiicient in carrying out the purposes, for which the same is designated. a
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to, Without departing from the spiritof the invention, and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In an attachment for casket carriages, wherein the latter include the usual corner posts, of means associated with the corner posts for preventing the accidental displacement of the casket from the carriage, said means comprising arms rotatably mounted tee outwardly chm; em.
2. In an attachment for casket carriages wherein the latter includes the usual corner posts, arms rotatably supported on the upper ends of said posts and adapted to extend outwardly therefrom, and upstanding feet arms adapted to extend outwardly from each of the posts, at right angles to each other, and an upstanding foot adjustabl y supported on the outer end of each arm for preventing the accidental displacement of a casket from, the carriage.
4. In an attachment for casket carriages wherein the latter include the usual corner posts, arms rot'atabl'y supported 'on the upper ends of said posts and adapted to be disposed adjacent the sides of the carriage,
when not in use, said arms being disposed outwardly from the corner posts- Whenih an operative position, and means on the outer ends of said arms adapted for engageon the upper ends of said osts and adapted ment with the ends and sides of aca'sket to V prevent displacement of the same from the ROBERT JAS. BEATTY.-
