To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALMA GUENTHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Stapleton, borough of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window Porch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has relation to porches and has particular reference to a window porch structure.

The outstanding object of the present invention resides in the provision of a window porch structure which is collapsed and portable and capable of being readily positioned and supported from a window sill to afford an enclosure disposed exteriorly of the window.

As a further object the invention contemplates a window porch structure which is comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable and safe, and which is capable of association with windows of standard construction.

With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specication particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A. designates a wall having a window B therein and which is provided with the usual window sill C. The porch structure constituting the invention consists of a floor or platform 10 of substantially rectangular formation and of an appropriate width to fit within the window. The floor or platform 10 is provided with a depending framework which consists of a pair of downwardly and inwardly inclined side legs 11 extending from the outer or forward end of the floor or base toward the rear and provided with beveled terminals 12 which are designed for flat engagement with the outer surface of the wall A. The legs 11 are braced by rearwardly and upwardly inclined braces 13 extending from and secured to the medial portion of the legs at one end of the brace and secured at their opposite ends to the medial under side of the floor. The legs are further braced laterally by a cross rod 14. The inner or rear end of the floor or platform is provided with a plurality of rows of vertical openings 15 which when aligned with the inner edge of the window sill C are adapted to receive therethrough the retaining members 16 for retaining the floor or platform in associated relation with the window. Preferably the upper surface of the platform adjacent the openings is covered with wear plates 17 having apertures aligning with the openings 15. Under this arrangement it will be seen that the device is adaptable for association with walls of various thicknesses. An inverted U-shaped frame comprising side arms 18 connected at their upper ends by a cross rod 19 is pivotally attached at the lower free ends of the side arms 18 by the pivots 20 to the bearing members 21 whereby the U- shaped frame may be swung from its vertical set up position downwardly against the floor or platform 10 when the porch is in collapsed condition. Adjacent the rear or inner portion the floor or platform 10 is provided with a pair of tubular standards 22 each of which is pivotally attached as at 23 to the bearing members 24. The bearing members 24 are spaced inwardly an appropriate distance from the side edges of the platform to dispose the standards 22 out of longitudinal alignment with the side arms 18 to allow for the folding of the standards 22 between the side arms 18 when the porch is collapsed. Slidable sleeves 25 are mounted on the standards 22 and are designed to bridge or cover the pivotal point between the standards and thebearing members 24 whereby the said standards are retainedin a vertical position. The standards 22 are appreciably shorter than the side arms 18 and have telescopically mounted therein for projection therefrom rod sections 26 which when projected therefrom are retained against accidental retraction by a latch 27. v The upper end of each section 26 is provided with a reduced upwardly projecting extremity 28 forming a shoulder 29v at its juncture with the section, whichshoulder is approximately in alignment with the upper end or cross bar '19'of the U-shaped front frame. of arms 30 are pivotally attached at one end to the cross bar 19 of the U-shaped frame and are provided at their free ends with vertical openings 31 which are designed to fit over the reduced extremities 28 and resting upon the shoulders 29 whereby the upper ends of the rear standards and the inverted U-shaped frame are attached when the porch is in set up condition. In order to further brace and strengthen the structure, a pair of diagonal brace rods 32 are pivotally attached as at 33 to the rotary elements 34 on the bearing members 21, said diagonal brace rods 32 being, formed at their freerear ends with heads 35 which are provided with a finger 36 adapted to engage in an opening 37 in the standards 22.

The means for enclosing the front and sidesofthe superstructure of the porch consist preferably of a canvas covering includinga front wall section 38 and side wall sections 39. and 40. The lower ends of the walls are provided with a hem 41 forming a continuous tunnel or passageway which is slipped over a U-shaped frame 42. The U-shaped frame embraces the forward and side edges of the platform or floor 10 and the side arms thereof rest within books 43 carried by the side edges of the platform. The connecting portion -or bight of the U- shaped frame 42 is maintained against upward movement by the turn buttons 44 which are pivoted to the upper surface adjacent the forward edge of the floor or platform. The rear terminals of the side arms of the U-shaped frame are axially recessed to receive the bolts 45 which are slidably mounted in bolt carrier 46 attached to the side edges of the floor, said bolts being provided with manipulating knobs 47. The upper edge of the front and side walls is provided respectively with out-turned flaps 48, which flaps are turned over the cross rod- A pair 19 and the arms 30. The latch 27 is manipulated to release the telescopic sections 26 whichare then retracted into the standards 22.. The angle braces 32 are disengaged from the standards 22' and the inverted U-shaped frame is swung downwardly in parallel relation to the floor or platform 10 together with the arms 30. The standards 22 are swung forwardly to lie inside of the arms 30, while the angle braces lie outside of the arms 18. The walls 38, 39 and'40 in folded condition are then folded over. parallel to the floor or platform overlying the collapsed superstructure;

I claim':

1. A window porch comprising a platform having means for attaching 'and supporting the same from the window sill, a collapsible superstructure attached to the platform including an inverted U-shaped member pivotally attached'at its lower'end to.the forward or: outer end of the platform andv capable of downwardfolding thereon, a pair of longitudinally extensiblestandards pivotally attached to the platform adjacent its rear or inner end, means for holding said standards in extended position, means for retaining said standards in vertical position, arms pivotally attached at one end to the bight of the U-shaped member, means at the free ends of said arms engageable with the upper ends of the standards, and a foldable covering for said collapsible superstructure having means for detachably associating the same therewith and with the platform.

2. A window porch comprising a platform having means for attaching and supportlng the same from the window sill, a collapsible superstructure attached to the platform in cluding an inverted U-shaped member pivotally attached at its lower end to the forward or outer end of the platform and capable of downward folding thereon, a pair of longitudinally extensible standards piv otally attached to the platform adjacent its rear or inner end, means for holding said standards in extended position, means for retaining said standards in vertical position, arms pivotally attached at one end to the bight of the U-shaped member, means at the free ends of said arms engageable with the upper ends of the standards, a foldable covering for said collapsible superstructure having means for detachably associating the same therewith and with the platform, a foldable roof, and interengageable means of connection between the roof and the superstructure for detachably associating the roof with said superstructure.

3. A window porch comprising a platform having means for attaching and supporting the same from the window sill, a collapsible superstructure attached to the platform including an inverted U-shaped member pivotally attached at its lower end to the forward or outer end of the platform and capable of downward folding thereon, a pair of longitudinally extensible standards pivotally attached to the platform adjacent its rear or inner end and capable of downward folding thereon, means for holding said standards in extended position, means for retaining said standards in vertical position, arms pivotally attached at one end to the bight of the U-shaped member, means at the free ends of said arms engageable with the upper ends of the standards, and a foldable covering for said collapsible superstructure having means for detachably associating the same therewith and with the platform, said foldable covering consisting of a front wall and side walls, the said side walls having detachable connection at their lower end with the sides of the platform whereby to permit of the inward overlapping folding of the side walls onto the end wall and the subsequent folding of said overlapped walls over the platform and collapsed superstructure.

4. A window porch comprising a platform having means for attaching and supporting the same from the window sill, a collapsible superstructure attached to the platform including an inverted U-shaped member pivotally attached at its lower end to the forward or outer end of the platform and capable of downward folding thereon, a pair of longitudinally extensible standards pivotally attached to the platform adjacent its rear or inner end and capable of downward folding thereon, means for holding said standards in extended position, means for retaining said standards in vertical position, arms pivotally attached at one end to the bight of the U-shap-ed member, means at the free ends of said arms engageable with the upper ends of the standards, and auxiliary angle braces pivotally connected with the forward portion of the platform and detachably engageable with the rear standards for bracing the structure, and a foldable covering for said collapsible superstructure having means for detachably associating the same therewith and with the platform.

5. A window porch comprising a platform having means for attaching and supporting the same from the window sill, a collapsible superstructure attached to the platform including an inverted U-shaped member pivotally attached at its lower end to the forward or outer end of the platform and capable of downward folding thereon, a pair of longitudinally extensible standards pivotally attached to the platform adjacent its rear or inner end, means for holding said standards in extended position, arms pivotally attached at one end to the bight of the U-shaped member, means at the free ends of said arms engageable with the upper ends of the standards, a foldable covering for said collapsible superstructure having means for detachably associating the same therewith and with the platform, the said detachable means of connection comprising a U-shaped bar embracing the forward and side edges of the platform, a hem at the lower edges of the covering providing a tunnel for receiving the U-shaped bar, means for detachably associating the U-shaped bar in its embracing position with the platform, and foldable portions at the upper end of the covering adapted to be bent over the bight of the Ushaped member and the arms pivotally attached thereto, and separable fastening elements therefor.
