COMBINATION TOOL.
Application filed July 23, 1923., Serial No. 653,306.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OSCAR PETERSON, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing at Dent, in the county of Otter Tail and State of Minnesota, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Combination Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a measuring instrument or combination tool and has for its principal object to provide a device of this nature which may be used efficiently in various measuring operations by proper adjustment thereof.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature having a compact structure which is easily manipulated and which will be durable, reliable, and well adapted to the purpose for which 4it is designed.
`With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the 'combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimedl In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of the device embodying my invention,
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough,
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 5--5 of Figure- 3 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, and
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing l various parts of the device disassembled.,
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the device which is provided at one end with a recess 2 extending longitudinally of the body for a distance and at its other end provided with a reduced extension which forms one leg 3 of a compass as will be more clearly explained hereinafter. A pair of channeled members 4 is disposed in the recess 2 for the reception of a pencil 5. These spring channel members 4 are tensioned to bind against the pencil when the Same is inserted in the recess. The outer ends of these members 4 are provided with apertured lips which may be fastened by screws or otherwise to the end of the body 1. An opening 6 extends transversely through the body and the intermediate portion thereof registers with another opening 7. The opening 6 receives a level 8 while the opening 7 is a sight opening so that the bubble of the level 8 may be seen. lThe upper edge of the'body 1 is channeled as at 9.' Ledges are provided adjacent the channel for slidably receiving the jaw 11. A fixed jaw'12 is stantioned at. the end of the body for cooperation with the movablejaw 11 'which kmay be held in adjusted position by a set screw 13. AThe jaw.
11 is formed in two pieces for engagement with the ledges 10. Suitable graduations are marked along the channel as is indicated in Figure 1 so that the jaws 11 and 12 may be used as a caliper for measuring` purposes.
A leg 14 is in the form of a three sided casing and cooperates with the leg 3 `for forming a compass. This leg 14 is pivoted to the body on a pin 15 which has one end pointed and countersunk in the leg 14 and the other end threaded for the reception of a nut 16 having the arm 17 so that the same may be readily tightened for holding the leg 14 at desired angles in relation to the leg A center pin 16 is held in the end of the leg 14 by a set screw 17 and a pencil or some other suitable marking element 1S is held in the end of the leg 3 by the set screw 19. Suitable graduations 2() are p-rovided on the body 2 for cooperation with the leg 14 for measuring the angle between the legs 14 and 3.
The upper or inner side of the leg 3 is provided with a level 21 and the sides of the leg 14 are provided with slots 22 so that the level 21 may be seen when said leg 14 is closed over leg 3. This leg 14 forms a protecting casing for the level 21. The outer or upper side of the leg 14 is provided with measuring graduations as is indicated to advantage in Figure 2 and these graduations are slightly extended over the side edges as indicated in Figure 1.
A marking element 24 is pivotally mounted on the end of the leg 3 being normally disposed in a recess 25 provided therefor. This marking element may be pivoted out of the recess and used for scratching llt) marks on boards or the like as is desirable in making measurements or notations from time to time? By referring particularly to Figure 7 it will be noted that the bodyrl adjacent the leg 3 is slightly reduced as* alf-26 andthis reduced portion acts as a stop for the pjvoted leg 14 and holds the outer sidethereofv parallel with the upper Vorrjinnersideof leg 3 and in spaced relation thereto. Having' thus: describedf my what I claim as new is-:-v
l.r In combination, a body, a Ispirit level inthe body; a casingrpivoted Lito the body atv oneendf-ther'eofand adapted to fit oveiwtlie body, said casing; having-its sides provided respectivelyl Withislots forl registering with saifd spirit level When thecasingiis in closedr position over th'e body,
