COMBINATION TOOL.
A u'canoa flied b'e'mbe 31-, 1524, Serial no. "(59,053, and in Canada January 14, 192
This invention relates to a combination tool for carpenters use. the same being the combination with a j'ointe'd rule graduated in any convenient manner, of a level lengthwise disposed in one of the sections of the "rule and another level transverse of the same that may be used for setting perpendicular timbers.
The rule has also an extension pivotally connected to the end of one of its jointed members to fold within it, and this extension has provision by which it may be set to any desired angle to mark oti' or measure a bevel cut. The end of the joint-ed rule member in which the extension member is pivoted is rounded to enable the outer edge to be applied to an angle as well as the inner edge. There is also a detachable member carried in the tool which slidably fits the pivotally mounted extension to project at right angles from it.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied,
in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the rule.
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the detachable blade for the extension.
Fig. 3, an edge view of the detachable blade.
Fig. 4 is an edge View to a smaller scale of the combination tool when extended.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View illustrating one of the applications of the tool.
In these drawings 2 and 3 represent the components of the rule proper which are preferably ten inches long and are pin-connected together at 4 with a stop joint. About the midlength of one of these members 2 and on the inner or protected edge thereof is set a level tube 5, the bell of which may be viewed through an arcuate aperture cut in the edge of the rule. In the same member 2 is a level tube 6 across the width of the rule member and across an aperture therein, which level may thus be used for setting vertical timbers or the like.
In the outer end of the other member 3, an eight inch blade 8 is pivotally mounted to fold within 3, the end of the pin on which it is mounted being threaded and provided with a milled nut or cross cut head 9 that the blade 8 may be clamped between the sides of 3.
The faces of this blade 8 along one edge have angular lines 10 which, when adjusted to coincide with the adjacent edge of the member 3, will set the member 8 at the angle corresponding.
The free end of the member 9. is notched as at]? to receive the blade 8 when and 3 are folded together and will form a stop for the member at ninety degrees from 8, as shown by the dot and dash lines in Fig. 'l.
A detachable blade 11 having at one end a socket 13 adapted to 'slidably tit on the member 8 and to project the blade 11- at right angles to S, fits within a pocket recess 12 in the outer edge of the member 2. The socket 18 of this loose blade slidably its on the member 8 and has a small cam lever Ll pivoted in its outer end by which it may be tightened thereon. This detachable member 11 may conveniently be used as shown in Fig. 5, to mark off a series of distances along a. board 15. Usually such distances are marked with pencil off the rule and the transverse lines 16 are marked ofi. with a try square. lVith this appliance each length may be marked oil across the width of the board, in one operation. It will be understood that the entrance to the recess 12 is in the outer edge of the rule, i. e., that edge which is opposite the edge shown in Figure 4.
The blades 2 and 3 are preferably each ten inches long and the blade 8, eight inches, and they are graduated in inch divisions and numbered beginning with the first division from the outer end of the member 8 as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing.
The combination is a convenient and useful one for a jobbing carpenter or builder: The combination of the level tubes 5 and 6 with the jointed rule 2, 3 affords a convenient means for checking horizontally and vertically disposed timbers, and being applied to the inner edges of one member of the jointed rule, they are protected against injury when the rule is folded together. The pivotally mounted extension blade 8 makes, in combination with the rule members 2 and 3, a convenient try square or bevel for setting off angles, and the provision of the clamping screw 9 enables the blade to be secured at any desired angle; while the detachable member 11 slidably fitting on the extension blade 8 enhances the usefulness of that extension.
Having now particularly described my in vention, I hereby declare that what I claim members being longitudinally split, a grad as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
1. An instrument consisting of two rule members hinged together at one end of each and adapted to be folded together, one of said members being longitudinally split, a graduated extension blade pivoted at one of of its ends to the outer or unpivoted end of said oneol' said members and adapted to be contained wholly within the split thereof when not in use, the other oi said two members having a recess opening along the outer edge, a detachable blade adapted to tit within said recess as a pocket when not in use, the blade including means by which it may be slidably mounted on said extension blade when the instrument is in use.
2. An instrument consisting of two rule members hinged together at one end of each and adapted-to be folded together, one of said iated extension blade pivoted at one of its ends to the outer or unpivoted end of said one of said members and adapted to be contained wholly within the split thereof when not in use. the other of said two members having a recess opening along the outer edge, a detachable blade adapted to it within said recess as a pocket when not in use, the blade including means by which it may be slidably mounted on said extension blade when the instrument is in use, said last named means comprising a pocket adapted to receive said extension blade, and a cam lever device on said detachable blade and associated with said pocket to secure the detachable blade to the extension blade, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DAVID G. GRAY.
