.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID E. sPooNER, oE sYEAcUsE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEEL TOYS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 153,988, dated August 11, 1874; application. filed July 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. SPOONER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy; and I do hereby declare that .for holding the same during the unwinding of the string.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a per speetive view, illustrating the manner of using the toy; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the wheel and stand, and Fig. 3 an enlarged ,view ofthe axle of the wheel and its bearings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a wheel, constructed generally in any proper manner and of suitable material and size, which is essentially provided with `journals a a, and an enlarged hub or drum, a', preferably grooved, as shown. B represents a stand, consisting, generally, of any suitable frame-work adapted to support the wheel, but essentially provided with bearings b b, open upon one side, as shown.
The manner of using my improved toy is as follows: A string of proper length is wound in the groove of the hub or drum uponone side of the wheel, in such manner that the inner end of the string is held by the winding. The wheel is then placed in the stand, with its journals resting in the open-sided bearings, as l revolved in lthe bearings until the string has entirely unwound from its hub, when it will be projected away from the stand, and roll rapidly over the ground or iioor to a great distance, if the surface be smooth.
The toy may be used, if desired, in connection with objects to be aimed at, such. as tenpins, or other similar articles.
If desired, ythe string may be applied to the circumference of the wheel, and the stand may e adapted to be held in the hand. l
It' desired, also, the spring may be uuwound by other means than the hand, such as a spring suitably arranged.
Having thus `fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The toy herein described, consisting, essentially, of the wheel adapted to roll upon the ground, provided with journalsV and a winding-surface, a stand having open-side bearings, and the winding-string, substantially as specified.
This specification signed and witnessed this 15th day of July, 1874.
