Description
Patented May 26, 1925.
UNITED STATESl CLARENCE H. YOUNG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRICK Application filed February To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE Il. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Siifl'olkand State of Massachusetts, have inventedan Improvement in Brick Pallets, of which the following description, in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in pallets, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to iinproven'ients in brick pallets. It is among the objects of the invention to provide a brick pallet of simple construction, great strength and durability, while relatively light in weight, and which very convenient for manipulation.
In the drawings, which show a preferred forni of one embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a bottoni view of a brick pallet;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line Q-*Q of Fig. l, being partly in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. being partly in elevation; and
Fig. Llis an enlarged partial section on the same line as Fig. 2, being partly in elevation. and illustrating in detail a preferred form of constructing an end of the pallet.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a pallet having a body portion S preferably formed of sheet metal and having lateral downturned flanges 9, preferably terminating in reverse flanges 10 to increase the strength of the pallet longitudinally while minimizing the danger of injury from careless handling and providing a relatively smooth bearing surface on the bottom of the pallet. The plate 8 forming the body portion of the pallet is preferably flanged downwardly and inwardly at its ends to provide smooth end portions 1l and underlying flanges l2 reinforcing the plate adjacent its ends. The side flanges 9 preferably terminate at 13 some what short of the ends of the pallet` so that the ends of the pallet provide overhanging IPAL'LET.
10, 1921. vSelal No. 443,986.
portions which may be conveniently grasped and which may conveniently fit over suitable supports. Thelpallet may be providediwith transverse reinforcements 20, which may be formed as a part of a bent plate having a part 2l extending between the body plate 8 and its end flange 12 to reinforce and strengthen the end of the pallet, the part 2l preferably extending to a point adjacent the ends ll of the pallet. The reinforcements 2() may be provided with any suitable attaching means typified by the flanged portions 22 at each end thereof lying against the reverse flanges l() and adapted to be secured thereto and to the side flanges 9 of the l pallet by any suitable securing means typified by the rivets 23.
The reinforcing means 20 preferably ex` tends slightly below the bottoni of the downturned fianges at the sides of the pallet.
lVhile I have shown and described a preferred form of pallet, it will be understood that considerable changes from the construction illustiated and described may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims:
l. A pallet having' a sheet metal body portion, lateral flanges and reinforcing means 20 at` points 'removed from the ends of the pallet and extending between said lateral flanges, said reinforcing means being provided with extensions 21 extending toward the ends of the pallet, said sheet metal body portion being reversely flanged at its ends to provide a part l2 turned over and underlying said extensions 21.`
2. A pallet comprising, in combination, a body portion, lateral flanges thereon, a reinforcing piece between said lateral flanges, projections from said reinforcing piece sen cured to said lateral flanges and an extension from said reinforcing piece underlying said body portion toward the endof the pallet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
CLARENCE I-I. YOUNG.
