c. H. YOUNG PALLET Filed A iil 15, 1922 I v 638w, W
Patented Nov. W24.
;' ED STATES CLARENCE H. YOUNG, OF BOSTGN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PALLET.
Application filed. April 15, 1922. Serial No. 553,074.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE I-I. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resirent of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pallets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawin s, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in pallets, and primarily, though not exclusively, to improvements in pallets for brick and the like. It is among the objects of the invention to provide a pallet of great strength, which can be conveniently handled and which is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top of a pallet;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bottom thereof;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a pallet including a body part or briclnsupporting surface 5 relatively flat, formed of sheet metal, and reversely bent at its ends to provide transverse stiffening portions 6, 6.
Laterally the pallet is flanged downwardly at 7, 7 and inwardly at 8, 8 terminating in lips 9, 9 preferably as illustrated overlying at their ends the transversely bent reinforcements 6, 6. Suitable securing means, typified by the rivets 10, may pass through the body part 5, the stiffening portions 6 and the lips 9 to hold these parts firmly in their proper relation and to stiffen the en tire structure. Where these rivets are used in connection with relatively narrow lateral stiffening flanges, they come near the corners of the pallet and admit of the center portion of the stiffening flanges 6, 6 being curved or arched as best shown in cross-section in Fig. 4, thereby considerably strengtln ening the pallet transversely beyond the strength which would be provided if the end stiifening parts 6, 6 were flattened throughout their entire length.
The preferred form of pallet illustrated is made from a single sheet of metal, is very strong even though the metal be of comparatively light gauge, is easy to handle and is comparatively cheap to manufacture.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I have done so for purposes of description and clarification, and that my invention is best defined by the following claims.
Claims:
1. A pallet comprising, in combination, a unitary fiat relatively extended body portion formed of sheet metal having reversely bent ends and laterally bent downwardly and inwardly to present opposed lips lying in a plane generally parallel to the plane of said body portion, and in adjacency to the other side of said body portion.
2. A pallet comprising, in combination, a
fiat relatively extended body portion formed of sheet metal having reversely bent ends and laterally bent downwardly and inwardly to present opposed lips lying in a plane generally parallel to the plane of said body portion, said ends underlying said lips.
3. A pallet comprising, in combination, a flat relatively extended body portion formed of sheet metal having reversely bent ends and laterally bent downwardly and inwardly to present opposed lips lying in a plane generally parallel to the plane of said body portion, said ends underlying said lips. and securing means adjacent the corners of the pallet and passing through said body part, said ends and said lips.
t. A pallet comprising, in combination. a flat relatively extended body portion formed of sheet metal having reversely bent ends and laterally bent downwardly and inwardly to present opposed lips lying in a plane generally parallel to the plane of said body portion, said ends underlying said lips and presenting transversely stiffening rounded portions therebetween.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
