UNITED STATES CLARENCE H. YOUNG, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS,
PALLET.
Application filed October 10, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. YOUNG,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pallets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention pertains to improvements in pallets, primarily though not exclusively intended for use in the manufacture of brick.
It is among the objects of the invention to provide a pallet of simple construction, of
strength and which may be. manufactured relatively inexpensively.
In the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention Fig. l is a bottom view of a pallet;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, being partly in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4ci of Fig. 1. being partly in elevation.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes I have shown a pallet having a body portion 5 of sheet metal pre- 30 senting a relatively large fiat surface provided laterally with curved supporting and stiffening flanges 6 reversely bent and terminating with relatively fiat lips adjacent the inner surface of the flat portion of the pallet.
At the ends of the body of the pallet I have shown transverse stiffening elements typified by the angle irons 7, and presenting a web riveted to the body of the pallet and extending beneath the ends of the laterally curved flanges of the pallet. The strength of the pallet is greatly increased where, as illustrated the rivets extend not only through the body of the pallet and the web of the angle iron but also through adjacent lips which terminate the lateral flanges of the pallet. Each angle iron 7 also presents a web generally perpendicular to the body of the pallet and preferably as illustrated extending across the ends of the laterally curved flanges in adjacency thereto. The height of this web preferably is suflicient to cause the web to extend beyond and protect the laterally curved flanges, while provid ing a more satisfactory sliding surface than would otherwise be present.
Serial No. 506,570.
senting a. web secured to said plate and ex tending between the plate and the ends of said lateral flanges and a second web extending perpendicularly to said plate and across the ends of said lateral flanges.
2. A pallet comprising in combination a sheet metal plate having unitary downwardly curled lateral flanges and provided at each end with an angled reinforcement presenting a web secured to said plate and extending between the plate and the ends of said lateral flanges and a second web extending perpendicularly to said plate and across the ends of said lateral flanges, and securing means for anchoring said plate, said first named web, and said flanges together.
3. A pallet having as a body part a sheet metal plate presenting an extended flat topped surface, said plate being downwardly curled laterally to provide lateral stiffening flanges, said flanges being reversely bent and extending into adjacency to the under surface of the flat portion of said plate. and terminating in lips generally paralleling said plate and extending toward the center portion thereof.
4. A pallet comprising in combination a sheet metal plate having unitary downwardly curled lateral flanges and provided at each end with an angle iron reinforcement having one web secured to said plate and its other web extending across the end of said plate and perpendicular thereto, said second web extending below said flanges to protect them and to provide surfaces readily slidable on a cooperating support.
In testimony whereof, T hav signed my name to this specification.
CLARENCE H. YOUNG.
