Description

May 19, 1925.
E. B. MEHLEM CROCHET PATTERN Filed Sept 22 1924 me/whoa Patented May 19, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA BERNER MEHLEM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CROCHET PATTERN.
Application filed september To a-ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA BERNER MEHLEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crochet Patterns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention aims to provide a simple and desirable pattern by means of which numerous articles may be crocheted in an orderly fashion, without the necessity of continually counting stitches, the device being particularly well adapted for the crocheting of sweaters, vests, and similar ladies apparel, most of which are provided with artistic designs to be crocheted in colors distinguishing from the main body of the article.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure l is a side elevation of a pattern embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is' a similar view showing the work partly completed over the pattern.
Figure 3 is a detail section on line 3MB of Fig. 2.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral l designates a backing sheet which is preferably formed of textile fabric, said sheet being cut to the desired shape of the article or section of an article to be crocheted, one section of a vest being the shape of the backing sheet herein disclosed. The sheet l is provided with a plurality of parallel horizontal lines 2 having individual identifications at opposite ends, such as the numbers shown. These guide lines are effective to cause the person using the pattern to make her rows of crocheting in a straight orderly manner, which is insured by finishing any row on the same line upon which it was started.
Rows of basting stitches 3 are engaged 22, 1924. Serial No. 739,221.
with the backing sheet 1 and extend across the guide lines 2, and at intervals, the rows of crocheting are engaged with these bastingvrows so that the work is held down flatly against said sheet, this being particularly advantageous when the sheet is provided with a design which must be followed in a color or colors distinguishing from the main body of the work. In the preferred form of the invention, parallel vertical lines l are formed on the sheet l, these lines and the lines 2 serving to divide said sheet into a plurality of blocks. y Coloring matter 5 is applied to some of these blocks to produce any desired design or designs, and when crocheting over any colored block, crochet cotton or wool of the same color is used. Thus, by producing the kdesign or designs of the proper color or colors on the pattern and following such color or colors when crocheting the work, said design will be duplicated on the latter, and it will be seen that in so doing, it is not necessary to continually count stitches as is now commonly done.
After completion of the work, the basting threads 3 are cut and removed so that the backing sheet may be detached from the completed work, leaving the latter in a symmetrical condition.
As excellent results have been obtained from the details disclosed, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may of course be made.
I claim:
l. A crochet pattern comprising a backing sheet, parallel guide lines thereon, and
rows of basting stitches engaged with said sheet and extending across said guide lines for the purpose set forth.
2. A crochet pattern comprising a backing sheet, parallel guide lines thereon, having individual identifications, and rows of basting stitches engaged with said sheet and extending across said guide lines for the purpose set forth. i
3. A crochet pattern comprising a backing sheet divided by horizontal and vertical lines into blocks, coloring matter filling some of said blocks, and forming one or more designs, and rows of basting stitches engaged with said sheet for the purpose set forth.
4. A crochet pattern comprising a back- 5 ing sheet divided by horizontal and vertical lines into blocks, coloring matter filling some of said blocks, and formingone or more designs, individual identifications for the horizontal lines, and Vertical rows of basting stitches engaged with said sheet for the pur- 10 pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EMMA BERNER MEHLEM.
