A further object oi the invention is to provide a knit article wherein there is provided a tightly knit edge at the sides and ends and loose knitting in the center imitating hand knitting in appearance and presenting a Very distensible structure.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a plan View of a knit scarf disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged 'fragmentary View of part or the scarf shown in Figure l.
Figure 3 is an enlarged View ot' part of' the center ot' the scart' shown in Figure l, illustrating the scalloped or fesooncd arrangement ot loops.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, l indicates the body or the garment which is provided with n loosely' knit structure, the loops of which fall over giving to the body a liestooned formation. The knit body l merges into side edges 2 and 3 and also into the end structures t and 5. These end structures and side edges are a tightly or closely knitted section of the garment but 'formed from the Same yarns as the body l. T."vhere the device is made into a scarf, suitable tasse] members Serial No. 161,872.
6 and 'T are formed from certain of the yarns. lVhere the device is to form part of a sweater or to be made up in some other iorm of garment, the edges 2 and 3 will act to receive the lines of stitching of thread connecting' up the parts of the garment. These edges being tight will readily receive lines of stitching Very much on the order of woven goods while body l is loose in its general appearance. vVlien the parts are stretched apprcciably, the body l will appear as shown in Figure 2 and the various loops 8 will assume the usual position of an ordinary knit garment. Then relaxed, the loops 8 will fall over somewhat and presont a 'lestooned structure shown more or less in Figure 3.
The scarf described herein, may be manufactured by the machine and method disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No, 188,758.
Vr'hat I claim is:
A machine knit scarf. comprising a flat knitted body having a loosely knit center. the loops ot' which fall over giving to the loops of the conter a festooned formation` and haring tightly knit edges and ends, said edges and ends normally maintaining said loops of the center in icsooned formation, whereby the scart presents the appearance of being hand knit.
