Description
T. M. BELL.
Sheet-Metal Ash-Barrels.
Patented Aug. 4,1874
Manon WWW WITNESSES ATTORNEYS;
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS M. BELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL ASH-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,74 0, dated August 4, 1874 application filed May 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. BELL, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Ash-Barrel, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of an iron ash-barrel illustrating my invention. Fig. 2' is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: :c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an ash-barrel provided with a corrugated metal plate secured to the side thereof, as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
A is the body of the ash-barrel, which is made cylindrical in form, and has a bottom, B, secured to it in the manner of a milk-can bottom, or in any other convenient manner. To the opposite sides of the body A are attached handles 0, which are provided with stops to prevent them from turning up against the sides of the barrel when being used. To the sides of the barrel A B, midway between the handles 0, are attached, by rivets, two plates, D, one upon each side, of sheet metal, and which are corrugated, ribbed, or beaded.
By this construction, the barrels, when being emptied, will always rest upon the corrugated plates D, which will prevent them from being bruised or injured by the rough contact with the edges of the cart-bodies, to which they are exposed by the careless handling to which they are subjected.
In addition, said plates strengthen the barrel both vertically and circumferentially, and form an ornamental attachment. In brief, the barrel is rendered cheaper, stronger, more durable, and ornamental in appearance, while its size and weight are increased but slightly.
I do not claim, broadly, a sheet-metal box or barrel having vertical strengthening-ribs; but
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- As an article of manufacture, the sheetmetal ash-barrel having the metal plate D provided with vertical corrugations, as specified, and secured thereto, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
THO. M. BELL.
