SPIDER.
No. 828,894. Patented Aug. 4, 1885.

HORACE C. VHITTEN, OF PLYMOUTH7 MASSACHUSETTS.
SPIDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,894, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed July 5, 1883.
T0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE C. VHITTEN, of Plymouth, county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spiders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in explaining its'nature, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View ot' my improved spider, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the lines x x of Fig 1.
This invention consists of a spider made rectangular in shape and having its handle arranged to project from one of the corners.
Referring to the drawings, arepresents the bottom of the spider; b, the sides, which are preferably inclined inwardly. c is the handle, which is arranged to project from the corner.
The spider may be of cast metal, or it may be struck from sheet metal to the desired shape, in which case the handle preferably is made separately and secured to the body of the spider by rivets. The under surface of the spider may havetlie circular flange d for entering the pot-hole.
The advantages of the construction are numerous, and among them may be mentioned these: First, the space or area of the bottom of the spider is more available than that of a round spider havinga similar diameter 5 second, it has three lips or noses, c, by which its contents can be discharged, and these are not used especially for that purpose, but are provided by the shape of the spider, third,
(No model.)
when the handle projects from the corner a larger portion of the metal is on a line with the handle than would be thel case with a round handle, and therefore the spider can be more easily and safely handled.
In making the spider of sheet metal I prefer to stamp itto form, and in that event the corners will be more rounded than whencast.
I am aware of patent to A. and G. Sizer, dated November 14, 1836, for a gridiron, and I consider that the same does not embrace the features of my invention.
l am aware of the patent, No. 118,140, granted Peter Loeb, dated August 15, 1871, which describes a form of cylindrical vessel with three spouts-one located on each side of the handle and the other opposite the handlebut the vessel therein described does not contain the essential features of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States- 1. A rectangular spider having the straight HORACE C. WHITIEN.
