Be it known that I, HGWARD E. a citizen of the United States, andlia resident of- Middletown; in the county of "Orangeand Statejof New York, have linifented a` new and glnipiovedy Sweatbaiild for Hats, of `,which the ffollowingfV isy ai full, clear, and exact description-` This invention has relation to head wear and refers particularly to a sweat `hand which is especially designed for use in connectionwithineis. straw hats.

The principal object of the present inventi-oii resides in the provision of a sweat band which affords a yieldable and close fitting head receiving opening in order to render the same more comfortable to the wearer while at the same time closely conforming to the shape of the head in order to prevent accidental displacementand to present a neater appearance when positioned on the head. f y

Other objects and advantages of the inveiition reside in the simplicity of construc-` tion of the sweat band and its mode of application to the hat and the comparatively low cost of production of the same.

lVith the above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims and illustrated in the accoinpanying drawing, it being` understood y that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in whichthe claims are expressed.

The construction of the sweat band further i operates to facilitate its application to the hat; thereby reducing the cost of assem; blage. The gist of the invention resides in eniploying a relatively stiff resilient velement to which the edge of the leather is secured for forcing the same radially inward to provide a bulged v portion 'at its juncture therewith.

I claim: y l. As a new article of manufacture, a sweat band for hats comprising a strip of semi-flexible material, initially of flat arcuate formation7 and a yrelatively stiff resilient element serured to the outer edge of the strip for securement in substantially ring forni within the head receiving opening to produce in the strip an annular inwardly projecting bulged head engaging portion Substantially at its point of juncture of the sweat hand with the hat.

2. its a new article ol n1a11ulactnre, a sweat hand for hats comprising :1 strip of semi-flexible inaterial initially of flat arenate formation7 a relatively stiff strip of niaterial doubled upon itself along a longitudinal line, a resilient eleinent arranged and secured in the bight portion thereof, a connection between the outer edge of the first Strip and the latter strip adjacent the bight portion, and means for attaching said latter strip adjacent its bight portion within the head-receiving opening to force the first strip inwardly to produce an annular inwardly bulged head engaging portion at its secured edge, as and for the purpose sperilied.

A sweat band for hats comprising a flat arcuate strip of material in band form, a stilfening strip folded along a longitndr nal line and Secured adjacent its hight portion to the outer edge of the arcuate strip to provide a tunnel, a resilient wire arranged and secured within the l'iight portion ofthe still'ening strip having its opposite ends at taehed to each other7 and a line of stitching extending through the stiffening strip and the hat at the point of uneture of the crown with the rim effecting radial contraction of the first mentioned strip to produce an :1.11- nular inwardly and vertically bulged yieldable head engaging and gripping portion substantially at the juncture of said first mentioned band with the hat.
