LICENSE PLATE..
Application tiled July 20, 1323. Serial $10,052,742.
To aZZlwzom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,-HERMAN T. H. S'rUE- GEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in License Plates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is for a sign which is espe- 1o cially adapted for use as an automobile license plate.
The invention has for its principal object to`provide a sign or license plate having numbers or other indicia thereon which are easily readable, either in daylight or at sign'plate being broken away to show the housing;
Fig. 2 isa front view of the license plate apart from the housing; and
Figr is a transverse section in the plane of line ITI-III of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 5 designates a metal plate which may be of the kind generally employed in license plates. Pressed outwardly from the surface of the metal or embossed thereon are large numerals 6, and at one end of the plate are year designating numerals 7, above which may be other indicia 8 for denoting the State or Territory issuing the license. I
I propose that such indicia may be in the form of a numeral, as shown, it bein"` contemplated that a diterent number e assigned to each State or Territory. v
As indicated by the color marking in Fig. the embossed letters contrast with the main surface of the plate. v Within the contines of'each character, are cut slots 6a or other perforations which conform to the outline of the number, giving a stencil like appearance thereto, the slots being so cut as to leave a substantial margin of the embossed numerals all around them.
To the rear or inner face of the plate is an isinglass or a transparent pyralin sheet 9 which ispreferably colored to contrast with the color of the characters andthe color of the plates. For instance, the plate may be blue with yellow characters, while the pyralin sheet may be yet another color. I prefer that the license plate at the front of the car be backed by green and that. at the other end backed by red transparent or translucent pyralin or similar substance. A
The plate and the colored backing sheet are supported in a rectangular sheet metal boX10,'of the necessary size, having a rib 11 formed around the inside thereof. The colored sheet is laid against this rib and then the plate is put in position to the rear of the edge 12.
lVithin the casing are one or more, preferably two, electric lamps 13 which are carried in sockets 14 removably screwed into openings 15 in the base of the box, the open ings 15 being sufficiently large to enable small electric bulbs to be passed therethrough. This enables the renewal of lamps to be readily accomplished. Bolts 16 pass through the box and plate for securing the two more lirmly together.
The letters formed in the manner indicated are easily readable, either in the day oiat night when the lamps 13 are lighted. The entire device may be cheaply made, and the invention is well adapted for use as a standard form of license for many or all States.
Suitable brackets 1.7 may be provided for securingthe sign to a car.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sign comprising a plate havingembossed indicia thereon, the indicia andthe plate being of contrasting colors, said indicia having the central areas thereof cut away to produce' a stenciled outline of the characters within the colored outline thereof, and a transparent colored sheet of non frangible material at the inner face of saidl plate, the color of the sheet contrasting to the color of the indicia. 4
2. A sign comprising a plate having embossed indicia thereon, the indicia and the plate being of contrasting colors, said indicia Vhaving the central areas thereof out away to produce a stenciled outline of the characters within the colored outline thereof, and a transparent colored sheet at the inner face of the plate. f
In testimony whereof I laffix my signature.
`HERMAN T. H. STUEBGEN.
