PARING KNIFE.
Application filed August 8, 1923. Serial No. 656,422.,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Vroarn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paring Knives, of which the following is a specilication.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved type of paring knife having its cutting edge provided by the blade of a safety razor blade that is suitably clamped to the holder of the knife.
This and other objects of this invention will be fully illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification and pointed out in the claim at the end thereof.
' In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of the paring knife.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of paring knife, the section being taken on the line 2*? of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the paring knife as viewed from theright hand end thereof as illustrated in Figure 1.
In the several figures of the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The paring knife forming, the subject matter of my present invention comprises the handle 1 having the holder 2 formed on the outer end thereof. Both the handle and theholder are formed up from a single piece of sheet metal preferably cold rolled steel however any other metal such as aluminum may be used instead. The holder 2 is made up in the form of an angular plate having its outer end provided with the cutting edges 3 and 4: that converge to a point in the end of the corner of the angular plate thus forming a pointed cutting edge for the paring knife with which the eyes of potatoes, pineapples, etc. can be quickly and efficiently cut out. To do this the pointed cutting edge of the holder is stuck into the side of the eye to the desired depth after which the holder is given a turn so that a cone shaped hole is cut into the potato or pineapple around the eye to be cut out which leaves the eye free to drop out of the opening thus made. 7
One side of the angular plate forming the holder 2 of the paring knife is slightly curved as indicated at 5. In this curved side of the holder is provided the longitudinal slot 6 which is located on the inner edge of the curved side to allow the razor or cutting blade 7 used in the paring knife to slightly proj eet therethrough. This razor blade may be any one of the well known PAT'ENTOFFICE.
types used in safety razors and is clamped to the upper face of the straight side of the holder 2. For this purpose is provided a clamping member 8 in the form of an inverted channel having outwardly flaring sides. These sides are springy and when forced down on the upper face of the razor blade 7 by means of the thumb screw 9 and 10 hold the blade rigidly in place on top of the holder 2. The thumb screws 9 and 10 pass through suitable openings in the clamping member 8 and are threaded into the holder at each end of the razor blade.
The cutting edge of the razor blade 7 projects but slightly through the slot 6 as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. This however is suflicient because the cutting edge is located at one end of the curved under side of the holder which allows the holder to fit closely against the skin of the vegetable or fruit that is being pared or peeled thereby.
The peelings from the knife pass through the longitudinal opening 6 as fast as they are being cut from the vegetable or fruit and from there pass over the top of the clamping member and razor blade to the outside of the holder of the. paring knife.
The depth of the cut for paring or peeling vegetables or fruits is governed by the distance the cutting edge of the razor blade projects through the opening in the holder of the paring knife. This can be regulated by releasing the thumb screws that hold the clamping member down on the razor blade until the razor blade can be shifted to the desired position after which the thumb screws are again tightened to hold the cutting blade in this desired position.
l/Vhen the razorbladehas become dull it can be reversed so that the cutting edge on the opposite side thereof is put in place of the dull. edge or a new blade may be put in its place.
I claim:
In a paring kuifethc combination of a hollow handle having an angularly shaped holder plate projecting from one end therecate-d over said razor blade and means for of and formed integrally therewith, said anclamping said clamping bar on top of said 10 gularly shaped holder plate having a slot razor blade to yieldingly look said razor provided in one side thereof, arazor blade blade in place on said holder plate.
carried on top of said holder plate on the In testimony whereof I a-ffix my signaother side thereof and projecting thru the ture.
slot provided in the adjacent side, a clamping bar comprising an inverted channel 10- GEORGE A. VEOMETT.
