To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that 1, FnANonsoo FERRARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in. the county .of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade Rolls and Holders Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a window shade roll and holders therefor, and has for its object to provide an improved means for supporting an ordinary spring actuated window shade roll, said supporting means comprising two separate holders, one of said holders being adapted to be attached to the journal pin which is fast to the window shade roll, the other of said holders being adaptedto be' attached to the spindle to which the spring which rotates the roll is attached and said holders each have a cord fastened thereto which extends upwardly therefrom. and through. suitable guides which are fastened to the window casing in such a manner that the roll with a shade thereonmay be. raised and lowered. bodily so that the shademay be used to cover any desired portion of the upper or lower window sash or both of said sashes, thus making it possible to open the window at the top or at the bottom, or at both top and bottom and still have the shade cover that portion of the sasheslocated between the open spaces.
It is still further an object of the invention to so construct the holders for the win-. dow shade roll that said holders be rigidly fastened in diiferent'positions and at different locations upon the window frame if it is so'desired.

In the drawings, 10 is a window casing, 11 a window sash, 12 a window shade roll and 18 a windowshade mounted upon saidv ill) roll. The window shade roll 12 is mounted end projects a short distance from one end of the window shade roll 12., while at the other end of said roll a journal pin 23 also The pin 23isprovided with the usual flange 24:.
The spindle holder 14 is preferably constructed of sheet metal and consists of a. flat side portion 25 at one end of which a flange 26 is formed. said flange preferably being bent perpendicular to the flat portion 25.
At its other end the holder 14: is bent to form a U-shaped portion27. The flat portion-25 of the holder 14: hasa slot 28 formed therein; a portion 29 of said slot extending inwardly from the edge of said holder and terminating with a portion 30 which is located at right angles to the "portion 29. Anotherslot 31 is formed in the U-shaped portion 27 of said holder, said slot 31 being oppositely disposed toand aligning with the portion 30 of the slot 28. Holes 32 are formed in the flange 26 and when the holder 14 is utilized as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and. 3, the cord 16 is secured to the holder 14 by being passed through said holes, after which a knot is formed in the end of said cord. The holes 32 may also be utilized in securing the holder 14 to the under side of the window easing by screws 33 as illustrated in Fig. 4, or to the front surface of the window casing 14 by screws 34 as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. Other holes 35 are also formed in the side 25 of the holder 14, said holes being utilized when it is desired to secure said h'older to the side of the window casing 14 by screws 36 as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Mounted upon the holder 14 and preter ably located within the U-shaped portion 27 thereof is a clamping member 37 The member 37 is preferably constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and is piyotally mounted at 38 upon the side 25 of said holder. The clampingmember 37 illustrated in detail in Fig. 7, embodies therein a flat portion 39, one edge portion or which is bent to form a flange 40, said flange be ing perpendicular to the flat portion 39 and a portion of the material comprising said flange 40 is in turn bent to form a clamp arm 41, the latter being parallel to the flange 40, and the space between the flange 40 and clamp arm 41 constitutes aclamping space 42 in which the flattened end of the spindle 22 may be inserted. A bolt 43 extends between the flange 40 and clamp arm 41 and is utilized to secure said spindle 22 in said clamping member. A slot 44 is provided in the flat portion 39 of the clamping member 37 and said slot is so located that when the clamping" member is positioned as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. that it will align with the portion or the slot 28 in the holder 14.
The journal pin holder 15 is quite similar in construction to the holder 14 and consists of a flat side portion 45 at one end of which a flange 46 is formed, said flange preferably being bent perpendicular to the flat portion 45. At its other end the holder 15 is bent to form a U-shaped portion 47. The flat portion 45 of the holder 15 has a slot 48 formed therein, the upper portion of said slot being' l rger that the lower portion thereof in order that the flange 24 of the pin may be inserted therethrough and formed in the Ushaped portion of the holder 15 is a hole 49 which aligns with the lower portion of the slot 48 and said hole 49 and the lower end of the slot 48 constitute a journal in which the pin 23 may rotate. The flange 46 of the holder 15 is protid'ed with holes 50 through which the cord 17 is inserted in securing said cord to said hel'der and said holder is also provided with other holes 51 which may be utilized in securing said holder to the side of a window casing.
The general operation of the device hereinbefore specifically described is as follows :iVhen it is desired to utilize the window shade as illustrated in Fig. 1, the holder 14 is attached to the spindle and held securely thereon through the medium of the clamping member 37. Upon such occasions the flattened end of the spindle 22 projects through the portion 30 ot the slot 28 of the holder 14 and into the clamping; space 42 formed between the flange 40 and clamp arm 41 of said clamping member 37 and said flattened end is secured in said clan'iping member through the medium oi? the bolt 43. At the other end of the window shade roll 12 the holder 15 is secured to the journal pin 23 by inserting said pin through the slot 48 and hole 49 in said holder. The cords 16 and 17 attached to their respective holders are then inserted through the guides 18 and 19 and pulley 20 and said cords are then utilized in raising and lowering' the window shade bodily as desired and the cords are then "fastened to the cleat 21. The window shade 13 may then be unrolled trom the window shade roll 12 in the usual well known manner.
When it is desired to fasten the holders 14 and 15 rigidly at various locations upon the window casing 10, the flanges 26 and 46 respectively of said holders are utilized in securing said holders to said casing and upon such occasions, the flattened end of the spindle 22 is located either in the portion 29 of the slot 28 or in the slot 31 as the case may be. No matter in what position the holder 15 is secured to the window casing 10, the journal pin 23 is always located in the hole When the holder 14 is rigidly fastened to the window casing: it is not necessary to utilize the clamping member 37 in securing" the spindle 22 in said holder.
I claim:
1. In combination, a spring actuated window shade roll, a spindle projecting from one end of said roll, said spindle being provided with a flattened outer end, a holder embodying therein a flange at one end thereof whereby said holder may be rigidly secured to a stationary support, and a U- shaped portion at the other end thereof and having a slot formed therein through which said spindle projects, a clamping member piyotally mounted upon said holder within said U-shaped portion and means to grip said flattened end of said spindle in said member.
2. In combination, a spring actuated window shade roll, a spindle projecting from one end of said roll, said spindle being provided with a flattened outer end, a holder embodying therein a U-shaped portion and having a slot formed therein through which. said spindle projects, a clamping member pivotally mounted upon said holder Within said U-shaped portion and embodying there in a clamping space, said clamping member being adapted to be rocked to position said clamping space 111110 and out of alignment With said slot and means to grip said flat support and a U-shaped portion, the latter having apair of oppositely disposed slots formed therein adapted to receive said spindie, a clamping member pivotally mounted upon said holder Within said U-shaped portion and embodying therein a slot and a clamping space, said clamping member being adapted to be rocked to position the slot and clamping space thereof into and out of alignment with the slots of said holder and means to grip said flattened end of said spindle Within said clamping space.
