CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee-2, 1919.
Application filed September 18, 1916. Serial No. 120,749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS I. IIhiMING- WAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and Stateof Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference generally to improvements in curtain and shadefixtures; and, the invention relates, more particularly .to a novel combined curtain pole and shade bracket.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a combined curtain and shade bracket, which will eliminate the useof sep arate brackets and also, lessenthe damage to the woodwork of a building, due to the attaching of the brackets thereto.
Still further, the invention includes a novel arrangement of shade supporting brackets; a plurality of pairs being provided, one of which are removably mounted, thereby, permitting the same to be readily detached when notin use, thus, providing a construction, whereby, two, shades may be supported in operative position, it being well known in the art, that shades ofdiiferent color and weight are used during the variousseasons.
Among the other aims andobjects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a device of the'character mentioned with a View to compactness, and in which the number'of parts are few, :the construction simple, the cost of production small, and the efliciency and operation high.
()ther and further improvements and novel details in' the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description that follows, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with :the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose'of illustration. i I I The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bracket, showing a shade roller supported thereby.
Fig. 2 is atop plan thereof, showing a plurality of shade rollers supported in 0p- 'erative position. together with a curtain or p y ppo ing ro e,
Fig. 3is a detail in sideelevationof the fixedly and removably mounted shade bracket and,
Fig. 4 is a detail in side elevation of the fixedly mounted shade bracket.
Similar characters of reference are employed in allof the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more specifically to the several figures of the said drawings, it may be here noted that the brackets as constituting the several pairs employed in the present 7 invention-are identical in construction, with the exception that certain thereof are provided with squared trunnion receiving openings while the remaining have arranged therein the usual rounded trunnion receiving openings. Hence, reference willbe had to but one bracket of the several pairs, in the description that follows. The present construction maybe said to embody an immovable bracket, indicated in its entirety by the numeral 1 and comprising a base plate 2 the same having formed therein, a plur ality ofopenings 3 wherebysecuring screws 4 may be passed therethrough and the bracket thereby, fastened in the desired position. Asupporting arm 5 is formed upon one side of theibase plate 2and bent at substantially right angles thereto, thus, providing for the necessary shade roller trunnion receiving means. The outer portion of the adapted vtoreceive therein the squared bearing-trunnion of a shade roller. To provide for means whereby the removably supported bracket may be received and maintained in proper position .upon the immovable bracket 1 the outerextremities of the latter are slotted at 8 and a free portion of the arm 5 is then bent outwardly or offset, to constitute a guiding and supporting finger 9, while that portion of thearm ,5, as in proximity to the base plate 2, has formed therein, anopening 10, the purpose of whichwill be presently apparent.
In referring to the removable shade bracket, I shall, for the purpose ofconvenience, indicate the same in its entirety bythe numeral 11, the bracket comprising a strip of bendable metal, the outer portion of which is depressed, thus, providing a concavo-convex portion 12, similar .to the portion 6, and has also formed therein a diagonally disposed rectangi'ilar pocket or slot 13, whereby, the squared bearing trunnion of a second shade roller may be received therein. A recess 14 is formed within the'bracket 11, preferably intermediate the ends thereof and is engaged by the offset supporting finer 9, when the bracket 5 is carried upon t e immovable bracket 1. Upon the rear extremity of the bracket 11, there is. arranged an offset finger 15 the same being 1 adapted to be engaged with the openings 10 of the immovable bracket, consequently, providing for means whereby the removable bracket will be securely fastened thereupon. With a view toward providing for means whereby the conventional form of U-shaped curtain pole, as indicated by the numeral 16 may be also supported by a bracket, a plurality of cylindrical sleeves 17 are secured to the outer faces of the base plate 2',
by soldering, welding or the like and are adapted to receive thereinto thelateral extremities of the supportingpole 16. As will be noted, the curtain pole 16 when in position is arranged within the same horizontal plane as that in which the immovable and removable brackets 1 and 11 respectively,
i openings, whereby are arranged. By this arrangement,- the shade rollers supported by the said brackets will behidden from view when the curtain or other drapery is arranged about its respective pole 16. Y 1 The operation "of viewed as follows:
' A plurality of the immovable brackets 1 carrying thereupon the cylindrical sleeves the device may be re- 17, are secured to a window frame by means 15 thereof being engaged with the openings 10of the said supporting arms and the recesses 14 engaged with the offset supporting fingers9, arranged upon the outer ends of the supporting arms 5. By arranging the 1 intermediate portions of the brackets 11 between the off et fingers 9 and the supporting arms 5, it is obvious that undue lateral movements of the brackets 11 will be prevented. The concavo-convex portions 12 of the brackets have arranged therein, the squared and rounded bearing openings, whereby the trunnions of the shade roller 19 will be received thereby. It is to be also noted, that the said concave-convex portions 12, compensate for the increased distance between the removable bracketa'thereby, permitting a pair of shade rollers of corresponding length to be used. WVith the shade roller supporting brackets thus positioned, the curtain supporting pole 16 1s engaged with the cylindrical sleeve 17in the manner hereinbefore set .forth, the curtain 'or other drapery having been previouslyarranged thereon. Should the device be used for supporting av smgle shade roller, the removable bracketfll maybe readily. disengaged from the supporting arm 5 of the immovable bracket and the latter used to support the desired shade roller. 7
Instead of using asolid curtain supporting pole, as shown in the preferred embodi ment of the'invention, it is apparent that conventional form oftelescopi'c pole may be substituted therefor; furthermore, that'the cylindrical sleeve 17 may be dispensedwith and the usual hooked curtain pole 'supporting brackets equally well desired purpose.
Still further embodimentsof the invention and those herein especially defined may be resorted .to" as conditions orpreference may dictate, as may be inkeeping with the hereto appended claims. Y I claim:
1. A curtain fixture comprising abase plate, a shade supporting arm rigidly extended therefrom, said arm being equipped with an opening in proximity to the base, said. arm having a vertical oifset finger on the end thereof, said arm being equipped with a shade roller securing slot or opening, a removable shade supporting armhaving its intermediate portion received by said offset finger, one QIId-OfStlClilGIl'lOVflblG arm being equipped with an .offsetfinger 'to'be engaged in said opening in said rigid'arm in proximity to said base, and the outer end of said removable arm being equippedwith a shade 'rollerreceiving slot for the purpose set forth. i r
2. A curtain fixture comprising'a base .plate, a shade supporting arm-rigidly extended therefrom, said arm being equipped with an opening in proximity' to-the base, said arm having a verticakofiset finger adapted for the on the outer end thereof, a portion of i said arm being formed with a laterally extending depression, which forms a concavoconvex portion, said portion being equipped with a shade' 'roller receiving slot or opening, a removable shade supporting arm hav ing a recess in its lower edge to be received by said offset finger, one end-'of-said removable arm being engaged by the face of the rigid arm to'jcover said depression, and equipped with an offset finger to be engaged in said opening: in Said rigid arm in prox 3. A curtain fixture-including a pair of lates each com risin a base a shade su porting arm extended from the inner edge of said base, a socket extending horizontally from the center of said base and arranged beside and in the same horizontal plane as V the shade supporting arm, and a U-shaped curtain pole having its lateral extremities received in said sockets and arranged in the same horizontal plane With the supporting arm whereby the sockets and the curtain 15 pole will hide the shade roller arms from View.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
FRANCIS I. HEMINGWVAY.
