PROGM$ FOR MWNG LIQUID ZINC FROM BLUE POWDER.
Application filed June 7, 1923. Serial No. 6%,066.
powder was that itconsists of small metal globules covered with a film of zinc oxyd.
l The purpose ofthe friction wasto cause a grinding of these globules by which the oxyd film would be removed.
The present invention is' based on the fact that the nature of the powder is not that of oXyd-covered globules, but that it consists, for the main part, of non-oxydized metal. Therefore the use of friction or grinding gives only poor results as is well known. It is also generally known that the rotating drum usually employed in the process of converting the powder into liquid zinc does not give any considerable friction to the powder, because the inside walls of the drum will almost immediately be an come slippery from small quantities of liquid ,zinc separating. This lubricity of the walls will cause the whole mass of powder to remain at rest during the rotation of the drum. r
My invention consists in the process of separating the non-oxydized metal from the powder by of shocks, and preferably while 1t is contained in a rotating drum'which is heated 40 as usual.
Tn order that my process may be readily understood 1 have illustrated in the accompanying drawing an apparatus adapted to carryout the process and in which-- Figure l is a side elevation, and
subjecting the latter to a series.
Fig. 2 is an end view of a rotary drum provided-with means for imparting shocks thereto.
The apparatus shown consists of any;
lindrical drum 1, provided on its outer periphery with one or more bearing members in the form of bands 2. These bands have an irregular outer surface and are sup orted on a series of rolls 3, journaled in ear ings 4 on opposite sides of the drum. Two of the rolls 3 are fixed on a driving shaft 5 carrying a pulley 6 which may be driven from any suitable driving member, not shown.
The present process'does not aim at frictioning the powder and the-usual rotating drum is not used to produce friction but only for the purpose of effecting in a simple manner a'continuous series of shocks causing settling in the powder mass, during the movement of the drum. The irregular peripheries of the bands 2, during their rotation by the rolls 3 causes a series of shocks to be imparted to the drum in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation of the latter.
Tclaim:-- 1. The process of making liquid zinc from blue powder which comprises subjecting the powder to a revolving action of a rotary heated drum, and imparting a series of shocks to the drum during rotation thereby causing a settling of the non-oxydized metal of the powder. v
2. The process of making liquid zinc from blue powder, which comprises subjecting the powder to a revolving action of a rotary heated drum, and imparting a series of shocks to the drum in a direction transverse to the axis of the latter, during rotation, thereby causing a settling of the non-oxy dixed metal of the powder.
Tn witness whereof I aflix my signature. I
FTLIP THARALDSEN.
