Stationary batch-mixers with stirrers having complex motions.-A machine for mixing or grinding cocoa-paste, chocolate, and like substances comprises a stationary circular trough, rotary scrapers, and grinders which rotate about three parallel vertical axes. The trough C is carried by a frame A and is provided with an inturned rim or flange S to prevent the paste from splashing over the edge. A central vertical shaft G is geared to an horizontal driving-shaft in which are mounted two sets E, F of fast and loose pulleys in order to allow the machine to be driven at a slow speed at the beginning of the mixing-operation. A spider H, in which two shafts 0 are mounted, is secured to the shaft G, and gear-wheels K secured to the shafts 0 gear with a wheel J secured to the frame of the machine. Thus the shafts O rotate about the shaft G and in addition revolve on their own axes. In turn, the shafts O carry spiders which serve as bearings for shafts N to which are secured planet wheels M meshing with pinions L secured to the spider H. Flat bottomed grinders P secured to the shafts N thus revolve on their own axes and rotate about the other axes. Inclined vertical scrapers are attached to a cross-bar T secured to the housing H, and the scrapers feed the paste inwards towards the grinders P. Another scraper, which is adjustable on the bar T, feeds the paste towards a central discharge cock R, through which the paste is forced by an auger Q which forms a prolongation of the shaft G. The grinders P may be smooth or grooved, or may be formed like ploughshares. The trcugh has a. double-bottom as shown, and it may have jacketed sides, to which water or steam can be admitted for cooling or heating the paste.
