Description

UNITED STATES PATENT. QFFIGE.
GEORGE W. PUTNAM, OF GLENS FALLS,- NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,377, dated July 21,1874; application filed May 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PUTNAM, of Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and in the State of New York, have invented certain.
new and useful Improvements in Coupling Cars; and do hereby declare that the folequal height, as will be hereinafter more fullyset forth. 1
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,-I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal Vertical section, showing two draw-heads provided with my attachment and coupled together; and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the attachments.
A A represent two draw-heads of the ordinary construction, to which my invention is to be applied. B and 0 represent the two parts of my invention, each part consisting of two vertical side pieces, a a, connected by means of forward-projecting horizontal arches b b, which are beveled both on top and bottom, as shown. In addition thereto the part B is provided with a top cross-bar, d, enlarged in the center and provided with a pin-hole, c. Any number of articles, I), may be used on each part of the attachment. Within the part B is arranged a wire frame, h, arranged in such a manner as to be thrown under the hole 0 in the cross-bar d, and thus support the pin G in position ready for coupling. When the draw-heads are brought together the arches of the part 0 pass in between the arches of the part B and turn the wire frame It away from the pin-hole 0, allowing the pin G to drop through all the arches and couple the cars.
By this device cars of unequal height may be coupled together just as well as those of the same height without any change in the coupling apparatus.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The parts B and 0, each consisting of two vertical side bars, a a, connected by means of horizontal beveled arches b b, and one of said parts provided with a cross-bar, d, in combination with draw-heads A A and the pin G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The wire frame h, combined with the coupling attachment B U, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of April, 1874.
