Description
B. G. PHILLIPS.
CAR-COUPLING.
No.172,769. Patented Jan. 25,1876- WITNESSES I IJV'VEJVTOR ca o WMW -Prrifls, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN G. PHILLIPS OF WELLSVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 172,769, dated January 25, 1876; application filed November {1, 1875.
. IVellsville, in the county of Oolumbiana and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a car-coupling which shall be simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my car-coupling, and Fig. 2 is a front View of one of the draw-heads.
A represents the draw-head, the front portion of which is slotted vertically lengthwise from the front end rearward for a suitable distance; or, in other words, the draw-head is open at top and bottom, and has a crossbar, B, at the bottom, connecting the two sides. In the rear part of the draw-head A is a rock-shaft, O, having a mortise through it, through which a tenon, a, is passed, said tenon being formed on the rear end of the coupling-bar D. The front end of this bar has a spear-shaped head, I), at the base of which, on top and bottom, are formed inclined shoulders or books 00 w.
The coupling-barD is held in the rock-shaft The two cars being brought together, the two heads b b will interlock by their shoulders or hooks a; or catching on each other, as shown in Fig. 1, which will couple the cars, and prevent their being disconnected accident ally. The coupling-bars D having the inclined shoulders or hooks w on both their upper and lower sides; cars of unequal height can be coupled with the same facility as those of the same height, anditdoes not matter which baris above the other, as they will couple either way. In front of its rock-shaft each coupling-bar D is provided with a chain, 01, Which'extends upward, and is attached to the hub of a handwheel, H, mounted on a stud or shaft at the front end of the car, so that by this means the cars may be uncoupled from the top by raising the upper couplingbar.
They may also be uncoupled from the side I by means of a lever, G, pivoted to the end of the car, and having its inner end connected to the chain (1.
-Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A The coupling-bar D, provided with spearshaped head b, having inclined shoulders or hooks 00 00 both on the upper and lower sides, and fastened to the rock-shaft O by means of the tenon a and pin 1, in combination with the draw-head A, open at top and bottom, the chain d, lever G, and hand-wheel H, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of October, 1875.
BENJAMIN G. PHILLIPS. Witnesses:
O. L. EVERT, A. B. JENKINS.
