Description

1. w. M EIKLE. Car-Couplings Patented Dec. 22,1874.
Wnwai UNITED STATES PATENT DFFICE.
JAMES W. MEIKLE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,108, dated December 22, 1874; application filed June 24, 1874.
To all whom itmag concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES W. MEIKLE, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain Improvements in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of carcouplings in which the pin is permanently connected to the draw-head, and is so arranged that it will automatically engage a link entering the draw-head. tion is to so connect the pin and to construct it in such a manner that when struck by an entering link it will be both swung and lifted thereby, so as to insure a more certain and more rapid engagement. To this end I construct the head of the pin (which is pivoted to the draw-head in the usual manner) with a forward projection, to rest on the upper surface of the draw-head forward of the pinhole. Thus, as the pin is struck by the link it will not only be swung back, but also'be lifted, the extreme end of the forward [)IOj( ction of the head bearing on the draw-head, causing the lifting action.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a draw-head embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, showing a link in the act of entering the draw-head.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The object of my inven- The draw-head A is constructed with the usual flaring mouth and the link-cavity A. The pin B is pivoted by links 0 G to a boss, or, on the top of the draw-head. The pin-apertures in the top and bottom walls of the drawhead are properly elongated to admit of the necessary play or oscillation of the coupling pin, which, when in looking position, as shown in Fig. 2, bears against the forward edges of the pin-holes, so that no strain shall come upon the pintles of the links 0. The head of the couplin g-pin has a triangularly-shaped forward projection, B, to rest on the top of the drawhead forward of the pin-holes, as clearly shown, and for the purpose already stated.
The coupling-pin may be lifted from the platform or the top of a car, to disengage the couplinglink, by means of a chain connected to its head.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The draw-head A, in combination with. the coupling-pin B, linked thereto, and constructed with a fixed forwardly-extending projection, B, to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES W MEIKLE.
Witnesses CORNELIUS LYONS, T. J. SOALLY.
