BENJAMIN F. ST. JOHN, OF SHELBYVILLE, INDIANA IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTING AND SMOOTHlNG-IRONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,285, dated July 21, 1874 application filed April 18, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, BENJAMIN F. ST. JOHN, of Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fluting and Smoothing Irons, of which the following is a specification:

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the accon'lpanying drawing, Figure l is a side View, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a frontend View.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is the handle, the base of which, E, consists of the plate 0 and the flange D, which latter surrounds the second section of the smoothing or fluting iron, when the handle is attached. E is the iron. The face of this iron maybe smooth for smoothing linen or other goods, or it may be grooved for tinting, to be used in combination with a grooved bed-piece, as seen in Fig. 2. F is the second or upper section of the iron. This section is cast on and forms a part of the iron. G is a spring -hook, attached by the pivot-pin H to the handle. I is a small recess or cavity, made in the second section, F, which the hook enters, as seen in Fig. 1. The hook works through a hole in the front of the flange D. The end of the hook is forced outward from the handle by means of a spring, K, confined on a pin, L. (See Fig. 1.) At the rear end the handle is attached by means'of a pin, N, in the second section, F, and a hole through the flange D. The handle is detached by pressing with the finger on the hook at the point 0, when the front part of the handle is readily raised and the handle slipped back and taken oft. The handle may thus be kept cool while the tinting or smoothing iron is heating.

The advantages of this arrangement will be readily understood by all who are acquainted with the subject.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tinting or smoothing iron, E F, made with the reduced superposed section F, having recess I and stud N, as shown and described, to enable the iron to be quickly, easily, and thoroughly locked to a detachable handle, in the manner set forth.
