Patented Sept. 19, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE,
JAMES M. WHITING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO BENJAMIN F. PABODIE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,500, dated September 19, 1876; application filed May 11, 1875.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. WHITING, of Providence, Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in the use of a combined shield, wedge, and thumb-piece in a vertically-divided iron.
Figure l is a plan of myimproved sad-iron. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In Fig. l, A represents a cast-iron handle, and b b a steel spring, passing through handle A, and suitably curved to enter irons c c, constituting a spring sufficient to hold the shoe E firmly while in use. D represents a vertical rib of shoe 6, placed across the same to correspond with opening in irons c c, which clasp the rib, and hold the shoe while in use, as above described. s is a shield; W, a wedge, and F a thumb-piece, combined in one, and pivoted to spring I) at one end by means of lugs and pin, as shown.
It will readily be seen that, by pressing down the shield, the wedge W is forced between irons c c, releasing shoe 0 from pressure of spring I) 12, thus allowing the shoe to drop out.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of irons c c, springs b b, guard s, wedge W, and shoe 0 with vertical rib, as shown and described.
JAMES M. WHITING.
