W. GARNER FOUNTAIN BRUSH 7 Filed March 11, 1924 Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER GARNER, OF COMANCHE, TEXAS.
FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
Application filed Marchll, 1924. Serial No. 698,493.
To all whom Maury concern; a
Be it known that I, WALTER GARNER, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Comanche, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to the art of brushes, and has more particular reference to brushes employed in the art of shoe shining, the primary object of the invention residing in the provision of a brush of the type including a polishing member and a polish applying dauber, a source of liquid polish supply being carried by the brush for ready distribution to the bristles of said polish applying dauber. 1
A further object is to provide a brush of the above character, wherein the liquid polish will pass through the bristles of the dauber upon inversion of the brush, means being provided for readily cutting off the flow of the liquid polish from the source of supply to the dauber whenever the same becomes necessary.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and claimed.
Now, having particular reference to the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughou both of the views:
Figure 1 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of a fountain brush constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Figure 2 is a detailed transverse sectional view, taken substantially upon the line 22 of-Figure 1, for more clearly disclosing the fluid control means between the source of polish supply of the brush and the polish applying dauber thereof.
Now, having particular reference to the drawing, my novel brush constitutes the provision of a'body 5 in the form of a relatively elongated and flat polish container, that is provided upon its top side with a filling nipple 6, to be closed by a cap 7 This body which is in the form of a sheet metal container is equipped with a desirable form of wooden handle 8, and formed upon the edge of the lower side of said body 5 is in Fountain for maintaining the usual wooden head 10 V of a wellknown form of shoe brush 11 there- I i At the forward end of the body 5, the same is formed with a forwardly and diagonally extending nozzle 12, that is formed adjacent its lower end with a circumferential groove 13. The top wall of this nozzle 12 is provided with a plurality of openings 14, and positioned over said nozzle in such a manner as to rotate thereon is a metallic thimble 15, the lower end of which is bent inwardly to provide a lip 16, that engages within the circumferential groove 13 of the nozzle 12 in order to prevent disengagement of the thimble with respect to said nozzle.
The top wall of this thimble 15 is also provided with openings 17 to be placed in registration with the openings 14 of the nipple 15, when said nipple is rotated through the medium of a thumb piece 18 formed integrally therewith.
The upper end of said thi1nble 15 is provided with a brush bristle receiving collar 19, within which are disposed brush bristles 20 to provide a polish applying dauber.
It will therefore be seen that when the bristle carrying thimble 15 is positioned in a manner as shown in Figure 1, an inversion of the brush will allow the liquid polish within the container body 5 to flow through the openings in the nozzle and nipple which will consequently pass through the bristles 20 for allowing the same to be applied to the shoes by the dauberthus provided. When it is desired to cut oil" the flow of the liquid polish during the employment of the dauber, the nipple 15 is slightly rotated through the medium of the thumb piece 18 for placing the openings 17 in the sleeve out of registration with the openings in the nozzle 12.
Numerous advantages of a fountain shoe polishing brush of this character will be at' once appreciated by those skilled in the art, and even though I have herein set forth the most practical embodiments of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope ofv the appendedclaim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
As an article of manufacture, an elongated hollow body forming va fluid container, said body being formed in its top and at one end with a diagonally disposed nipple, said nipple being closed at its outer end and said closed end being provided with discharge openings, said nipple being also formed at its point of connection with the body with a circumferential groove, a thinible sur rounding said nipple for rotation about the same, the inner end oi said thinible being bent into said groove to provide a swivel joint, said thirnble being provided between its ends with an apertured partition cooperating with the adjacent end of said nipple, the adjacent end of said thirnble being constructedto form a bristle retaining flange, said thimble being also provided with a laterally directed finger piece by means of which it is rotated.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER GARNER.
