UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE mrrn JOHNSON, or owfls -HEAID, MAINE IPAINTBRUSH Application filed August 23, 1929. Serial No. 387,957.
This invention relates to certain 'new and useful improvements inbrushes and holders therefor embodying among other characteristics means for detachably, securing a brush head whereby the latter may be wholly sub-' in the holder to catch the excess paint draining from the brush bristles when the latter is being employed in an inverted position.
More specifically stated the means for detachably securing the brush head is provided with a remote control whereby the brush heads may be released without-necessitatingthe hands being brought into direct contact.
with the paint.
With the above and other dbjects in view,
the invention further consists of the follow-4 ing novel features and details of construction to'be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and' pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view' so taken through my novel form of holder.
Figure 2 is'an end elevation of the brush head engaging end of the holder.
Figure 3 is an end elevation from the handle end-of the holder. Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference charactenlO indicates generally a handle of hollow fore mation and shaped after the manner of the conventional paint brush handle. A sleeve portion '11 of elongated contour arranged upon one end of the handle extends for appreciable distances beyond the handle proper to define or otherwise provide a pocket, reservoir or receptacle 12. The brush head referred to in the foregoing and as indicated at 13 is provided with a bristle support 14 withinwhich the innermost ends of the bristles are cemented or vulcanized. Said base is 6 partially received within the receptacle or resert o'ir 12 and seated upon the confronting ledge portions 15 of angle plates 16 arranged u on the inner. side walls of the sleeve 11.
T ose portions of the angle plates having engagement with the sleeve also serve the added 65 purpose of providing spacers for the base 14 in order that the paint or other substance in liquid or plastic form being applied by the brush will drain into the receptacle orgreservoir 12 rather than upon the hands an arms of the painter. The pocket, reservoir or receptacle 12 is made large enough to catch'certain quantities of the paintland which may be regulated as to size commensurate with the length' of time and the consistency of the paint during which the brush is maintained in an inverted posit-ion. I A locking shaft 17 extending through the bore 18 in the handle member 10 is screw threaded, as indicated at 19, upon that end projecting within the receptacle or "reservoir 12 for connection with the brush head base 14 in the manner shown. A cap 20 carried upon the remote oppositely projecting end of the locking shaft'l7 provides the means of actuating the shaft 17 exteriorly of the brush handle and remote from the connection of the shaft with the brush head whereby the hands of the painter will not be brought into direct contact with the paint.
The invention offers many advantages, the
principal OfWhlCh are alluded to in the'following. The detachable connection estab-' ,lished between the handle and brush head by the shaft 17 will obviate the usual necessity of smearing the hands with the paint during the process of application and cleaning of the brush in view of the remote control. The remote control is also advantageous for the rea-' son that the brush heads may be wholly released from the handle proper and'deposited within a receptacle of cleaning fluid within which the brush head will be submerged to remove all of the paint therefrom whereby the brush head may be used indefinitely for any color paint. Obviously the paint drained and caught within the receptacle or reservoir 12 may be returned to the paint bucket each time the brush bristles are dipped within the paint. This will relieve filling up of the re- 0 ceptacle or reservoir and will require no effort on the part of the painter tothis end. V In order that'the brush may be adequately used undr all conditions and to preserve the space around and about the brush head, it is m desire to set certain of the ledge portions of the. angle plates within pockets in the bristle support. This form of connection will prevent turning of the bristle support within the reservoir or receptacle to preserve the space therebetween inc dent to the turmng tendency exercised by the actuating shaft '17 drawing the bristle support within the receptacle or reservoir; The invention, .is' susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and' ninor details of construction, and the right is here-- 1 in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is I '1. The combination with a brush head having a bristle base, of a hollow handle formedv with a receptacle within one end to accommodate said base, angle plates carried upon the inner side walls of the receptacle to support said base in spaced relation to the bottom and side walls of the receptacle, a shaft extended through the handle having detachable o connection with said base, and remote control means included upon a projecting portion of the shaft to facilitate releasing of-the brush head from a remote point.
2. The combination with a brush head having a bristlebase, of a hollow handle formed with a receptacle within one end to accommodate said base, angle plates carried upon the inner side walls of the receptacle to support said base in spaced relation to the 40 bottom'and side walls of the receptacle, a shaft extended through the handle having detachable connection with said base, said brush head having pockets receiving certain of the angle plates to obviate-turning within the receptacle, and remote control means included upon a projecting portion of the shaft to facilitate releasing of the brush head from a remote point. i In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RUTH JOHNSON.
