J. D. WALKER FOUNTAIN BRUSH Filed August 29, 1925 Jr A;

WITNESS:
ATTORNEY Patented Jan.'18, 1927.
' UNITED STATES JOSEPH D. WALKER, OF WHITESBURG, TENNESSEE.
FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
Application filed August 29, 1925. Serial'No. 53,389.
This invention relates to fountain brushes, an" object being to provide a shaving brush by means of which soap may be carried and supplied to the brush bristles in desired 6 quantities for use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fountain shaving brush which is simple in construction, may be manufactured and assembled in an economical manner and may bev readily taken apart for cleaning purposes.
With the above and other objects in' view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of a shaving brush constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view on the line 3-3 of Figured.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the valve casing.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view of the brush body.
Referring to the drawings in detail where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, thereference character 10 indicates the body of the brush which forms a part of the brush handle 11 and which carries the bristles 12.
The body 10 is of hollow formation and is threaded at one end for removable engagement with the adjacent threaded end of a handle 11, the latter being provided with a pocket or compartment 13. The body 10 is provided with a dovetail groove 14: and slot 15 at diametrically opposite sides thereof, the slot receiving a reduced extension 16 which is caried by a valve casing 17. The casing 17 also has extending therefrom a tongue 18 whose opposite side walls are bevof the dovetail groove 14.
The valve casing 17 is provided with a cylindrical bore 19 whose outer end projects outwardly from the extension 16 and has its outer wall exteriorly threaded to receive a cap 20. The adjacent end of the handle 11 when screwed downward upon the end of the eled for slidin engagament with the walls ,27 inward, suificient pressure will be body 10, engages this cap and holds the valve casing 17 against movement.
Communicating with the cylindrical bore 19 is an inlet port 21 which extends through an exteriorly threaded nipple 22 and the lat ter is coupled to the reservoir 23 by means of a coupling sleeve 24. This reservoir 23 is preferably made of soft rubber and is designed to contain soft soap or a similar fluid. The cylinder 19 is also provided with an outlet port 25 and the latter is in communication with the inner end of a discharge tube 26 which extends into the bristles 12. The port 25 is longitudinally offset with respect to the port 21.
Operating within the cylinder 19 is a plunger 27 which has connected thereto one end of a rod 28. This rod extends through the cap 20 and is provided upon its outer end with a head-or button 29 and a spring 30, the latter acting to normally force the head 29 outward.
'In the use of the brush, the liquid soap will pass by gravity into the cylindrical bore 19 at the inner end of the latter, but will be prevented from passing outward through the opening in the nip le 26 due to the fact that this opening will become closed by a film of the dried soap. By pressing inward upon a button 29 and moving the plunger ro vided to force the soap from the bore? 19 through the passage or port 25 so that the film which closes the outer opening of the nipple 26, will be broken and the soap forced therethrough. By this means, the amount of soap contained within the cylinder between the port 21 and the inner end of the cylinder will be delivered to the bristles at each inward movement of the plunger.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A fountain brush comprising a body carrying bristles at one end, a hollow handle removably secured to the opposite end of the body, said body having a central bore and a relatively large pocket at the inner end of the bore with a dove-tailed groove extending laterally from the pocket, a valve casing shaped to be received within and engage the wal s of the pocket, said casin being provided with a dove-tailed extenslon to fit the groove and said casing being further provided with a valve chamber having an inlet port and a discharge port, a fluid reservoir within the handleand secured to the valve casing and .commumcatmgwith the valve chamber,a discharge tube carried b the valve casing and communicating with the valve chamber at a point offset with respect to the point of communication of the reservolr and a spring actuated plunger valve Withll'l the valve chamber.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
I JOSEPH D. WALKER.
