SAFETY DEVICE FOR GAsJ'ETs.
Application filed October 12, 1923. Serial No. 668,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FLORENCE LEISER and FRED P. STEWART, are citizens of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Gas Jets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety devices for gas burners and is especially adapted for application to gas ranges or stoves, an object being to provide means which will yieldingly engage the burner valve handle to hold said handle 1 against accidental movement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be constructed from a single length of material and which may be easily secured in place. 7
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention further includes the following novel features andodetails of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a gas range with the invention applied. s
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view. v
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device per se.
Figure 4 is an elevation partly in section illustrating a modified means of securing the device in place.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a gas range which is provided with a pipe 11 for distributing gas to the burner of the range through the usual valves 12, the latter being controlled by handles 13.
These handles which extend at right anported by a shank 18 which is threaded for a portion at its length.
In Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, the device is shown attached to and supported by a pipe 11, for this purpose there is provided a clamp strap 19 which engages around the pipe and whose opposite ends are provided with openings to receive the shank 18. Nuts 20 engage the shank upon opposite sides of the ends of the strap so that the said ends may be brought together in clamping position about the pipe 11.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 4 is substantially the same as that just described, except that the shank 18 of the device extends substantially parallel to the length of the spring arms and has an opening provided in the range housing, a portion of which is indicated at 21. Nuts 22 engage the shank 18" upon opposite sides of the housing 21 and act to securely hold the device in place.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z 1. The combination with a gas range having right angularly disposed horizontally swinging valve handles, of means mounted upon the range for engagement by the handles, said means being formed from a single length of resilient material and comprising a shank, spring arms carried at one end of a shank, a coil connecting the arms at one end, oppositely disposed intermediate off set portions for said arms, outwardly flared extremities at the opposite free ends 1 of the arms, a clamp strap having its opposite ends engaged with the shank and means carried by the shank for clamping said ends in position.
The arms 55 2. The combination with a cock having an angularly disposed handle, of a safety device formed from a single length of Wire and comprising a shank, means at one end of the shank whereby the device may be secured in place, a resilient arm formed by a continuation of the opposite end of the shank, a coil at the end of the arm remote from the shank, a second arm extending 10 from the coil, oppositely disposed seats provided in the arms for receiving the handle of the cock and outwardly flared extremities at the free end of the last mentioned arm and at the juncture of the first mentioned arm and shank.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures.
FLORENCE LEISER. FRED P. STEWVART.
