Beit known that we, Louis Forman and ALEX UZsv'rH, citizens of Hungary and the United States, respectively, residing at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in yloot-li Brush and Paste Serving Receptacles, of which the following' is a specification.
This invention relates to toothbrushes, having particular reference to a toothbrush in which are embodied paste feeding means.
The invention has for an object the provision of a novel form of toothbrush which embodies a receptacle for the paste, from which receptacle the paste can be readily fed to the brush.
More specifically speaking, the invention has for an object the provision of a paste ejecting device which will receive, and eject the paste from, the ordinary flexible tube in which such paste is commonly sold.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advz-mtages thereof, references will be had tothe following` description and accompanying` drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now to the drawings the reference numeral 10 indicates a brush backing from which bristles 11 project. This backing` 10 and bristles 11 may he constructed of the materials ordinarily employed in toothbrushes, the bristles being embedded in the view thereof at right angles to Fig. 1.

The body of the paste tube 15 is received within a cylindrical casing 20 into which the rear end of the nipple 13 fits snugly, the front end of the casing 20 engaging a `circumferential flange 21 on the nipple. .The nipple 13 and casing 2Oy locked together by means of a coupling ring 22 whichv screws on the threaded end of the casing 20 and has an inturned flange 22 engaging in front of the flange 21 on the nipple. The casing 20 preferably has an integral collar 23 formed thereon against which the coupling 22 abuts.
The paste tube, when full, substantially fills the casing 20 and is gradually coinpressed to force the paste out through the igiassage 16 and `tube 17 by a suitable follower which in the present embodiment of the invention, is constructed and operated as follows: This follower4 comprises a short cylindrical thimble 25 across which a central longitudinal partition or web 26 eX- tends, this partition being enlarged at the centre in the form of a hub 27. Fixed to opposite ends of the hub 27 are disks 28 which are of less diameter than the bore of the thimble,A and which constitute the active ends or faces of the follower. These disks 28 are here shown as secured to the hub 27 by screws 29 having their heads countersunk into the disks and which engage in opposite ends of the hub.
When the follower is in position the thimlole 25 surrounds the casing 20 while the disks 28 llt snugly therein, the ends of the web 26 being accommodated in two longitudinal slots 3() in the casing the follower is caused to travel along the casing by the following means:
Freely surrounding the casing is a barre-l of slightly less length than the casing 20, this barrel also surroundingl the thimble The latterl is exteriorly screw threaded, while the barrel 32 is correspondingly interiorly screw threaded from end to end, the threads in the barrel engagingthe threa thimble Q5, the threads on the barrel and thimble being tn'eferably left hand threads. lt will be obvious then that if the barrel is rotated without receiving axial movement, the follower will be caused to move along the easing 2t), the follower beingheld against rotation with the barrel by the engagement of the web 2G with the walls of the slots 30.
The. barrel is held against axial displacement on the casing, at its forward end by the collar 23 and at its rear end by a cap 3st which is screwed on the neglecting rear end of the casing, it being understood that when the cap is screwed home it bears on the end of the casing and not on the end of the barrel. To cause the barrel to 'lit snugly on the casing a pair of collars are litted in opposite ends thereof to lill the space between the barrel and casing, it being obvious that the thiinble can move along the space between these collars, or substantially the full length of the barrel. t
ln the use of our improved device, when a paste tube is to be inserted the coupling ring 92 is loosened, separating the brush proper, constituted by the parts l0, ll, from the hollow handle constituted by the parts 20, "n etc. The previously exhausted paste OL tube is then disengaged from the nipple lil and a new one attached thereto by screwing its head lei into the nipple. As will be apparent, the follower 28 etc. will be close to this end of the casing and to obviate the necessity of threading the thiinble back along the barrel the cap 3l is removed and the casing is reversed the end on which the cap was screwed being engaged with the nipple 13 and the cap screwed on the other end, the follower being now in the rear end of the casing as will be understood. When the brush is to be used, barrel 32 is rotated advancing the follower, and forcing the paste through the passage 1G and tube ll onto the bristles of the brush; As shown in Fig. S we may provide the brush with a discharge tube 17 constructed with a normally flat is on the discharge end, as shown, which thus remains closed when free from paste.
To clean the passage 16 we may employ a small brush 40, on the end of a rod 4l (see Fig, 6). The bristles may be protected by a guard 42 slipped over the forward end of the backing l0.
`While rwc have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of our invention it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction shown and that various changes and modifications might he made therein without depart-ing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we Vflaim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows l. device of the class described comprising a cylindrical casing adapted to contain a cleaning medium, said casing having each end open and being threaded at each end for selective attachment to a desired part, a;
double ended follower slidable in said casing, an interiorly threaded barrel rotatable on said casing and having threaded engagement with said follower, and a cap adapted to be selectively fixed upon either end of the casing.
