5 Claims.
The invention relates to devices for ejecting liquid, usually in small measured quantities, from a tubular cartridge, said cartridge being provided at its front end with liquid discharge means or with provision for connecting a needle or the like therewith, and being closed at its rear end by a piston-forming plug, the plug being pushed forwardly in the tube by means of a plunger, when liquid is to be ejected. In such devices, it has heretofore been customary to provide the head or body of the ejecting device, with a tube or cradle for holding the cartridge in operative relation with said head and the plunger, but the principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction in which the rear end of the tubular cartridge is directly connected with the head of the ejecting device without the necessity of providing such a tube or cradle, said rear end of the cartridge and the head being provided with attaching elements which may be directly engaged with each other, said elements being preferably in the form of screw threads.
A further object of the invention is to dispense with the use of a needle for discharging the contents from the cartridge and in carrying out this end, I provide a closure for the front end of the cartridge tube, said closure having a tubular liquid discharge nipple whose outer end is normally sealed, it being intended however, that said sealed outer end shall be cut off with a pair of shears or the like when liquid is to be initially discharged, said nipple being preferably of yieldable nature in order that a clip or the like may be used to flatten said nipple and prevent accidental liquid leakage after the first and the subsequent liquid ejecting operations have been per formed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a head for the ejecting device of such form that it may be readily held between the first and second fingers of one hand while the plunger is being pushed with the thumb of said hand, the structure of said head being such that no projecting finger-pieces are required upon it.
Yet another object is to provide an improved and simplified stop for limiting the forward movement of the plunger and for consequently limiting the amount of liquid discharged at any operation.
Yet another aim is to provide a construction of extremely simple and inexpensive nature, yet one which will be highly efficient and desirable.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying draw- -1ng.
Fig. 1 is a disassembled perspective view showing the cartridge disconnected from the head of the ejecting device.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view showing the cartridge and the head connected with each other, the front end of the liquid discharge nipple cut off, and the piston-forming plug pushed forwardly to some extent in the cartridge tube.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the preferred manner of closing the front end of the discharge nipple after each operation of the device.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View of an enlarged scale showing the manner in which the adjustable stop is freed from the plunger rod for adjustment.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
A preferred construction has been disclosed and will be rather specifically described, with the understanding however, that variations may be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
The head 6 of the ejecting device is provided with a substantially cylindrical portion l to be received between the first and second fingers of one hand, and is further provided with a continuous lateral circumferentially extending flange 8 at the rear end of said substantially cylindrical portion, said flange being adapted to abut the sides of the fingers at the palm side of the hand. The cylindrical portion 7 is recessed to provide it with a forwardly open socket 9, and a bore l extends centrally from this socket through the rear end of the head 6. A plunger rod H is slidable through this bore It], said plunger rod being provided with an adjustable thumb-piece l2 to be pushed by the thumb of the same hand whose fingers hold the head 6.
The liquid-containing cartridge is includes a tube l4 preferably formed from glass, the front end of said tube being provided with liquid-discharge means l and the rear end of said tube being closed by a piston-forming plug 56 prefer. ably constructed from rubber. The rear end of the tube I4 is receivable in the socket 9 and said tube and socket are provided with inter-engageable screw threads I7 and it. These threads may be quickly and easily engaged, properly relating the cartridge I 3 with the head 6 so that forward sliding of the plunger'rod ll will similarly slide the plug IE to eject liquid from the tube M.
The liquid-discharge means I5 is preferably device as that herein in the form of an elongated tubular nipple formed from rubber and having an integral closure l9 for its outer end, the inner end of said nipple being integrally joined to a restricted central part of the disk-like body portion of a rubber cap 20, said body portion having an integral rearwardly projecting flange at its peripheral edge which is stretched over the front end of the tube 14 and tightly closes the same. Preferably this front end of the tube I4 is provided with a circumferential ridge 2| to facilitate a tight con nection of the cap 20 therewith, and this cap may be sealed on by wax 22 or other suitable material.) Similar sealing means (not shown) is preferably provided at the outer end of the plug [6, this sealing means however, being readily broken as I soon as said plug is pushed forwardly.
When liquid is to be outer end IQ of the nipple of shears or the like, and the plunger II is then pushed forwardly. After the liquid dispensing operation, a suitable clip or the like 23 (Fig. 3) is preferably employed to flatten the outer end of the nipple l5, preventing leakage of liquid.
The thumb-piece I2 is preferably bent from a single metal strip having one portion 24 to contact with the thumb, and an arm portion 25 integral with the outer end of said portion 24, said arm portion constituting a detent whose free end is concavedly curved as shown at 26 in Fig. 5, for the purpose of snugly seating in any one of a plurality of circumferential grooves 21 formed in the rod H. The portion 24 of the thumbpiece I2 is suitably secured to a col1ar28 which is loosely slidable upon the rod ll so that said collar may be tilted as shown in Fig. 4 to disengage the detent 25 from a previously engaged groove 2?, allowing adjustment of the entire thumb-piece to any desired position along the rod ll. Tilting of the thumb-piece in the opposite direction causes the detent 25 to engage the selected groove 21, thereby connecting said thumb-piece with the rod II. when the portion 2 1 is now pushed with the thumb, while holding the head 5 between the first and second fingers, the plunger rod is forwardly slid and the thumb pressure serves to hold the detent 25 engaged with the selected groove 21.
It is of course intended that initially the head 6 and other parts shown at the right of Fig. 1, shall be sold with a plurality of the catridges l3, and only the cartridges for connection with the head. It will be understood that while the nipple l5 and cap 26 are preferably embodied only in such a disclosed, they would be useable in connection with other kinds of liquid ejectors. Moreover, the same is true of the adjustable stop and thumb-piece l2. The word stop is used in connection with this member in view of the fact that if it is pushed forwardly until it strikes the rear end of the head 8, it forms a stop limiting the forward movement of the plunger rod II and consequently limits the quantity of liquid ejected. 1
While excellent results may be obtained from the general construction shown and described and such construction is therefore preferably discharged, the closed '5 I5 is cut off with a pair that thereafter the purchaser shall purchase followed, I wish to again invite attention to the possibility of making variations within the scope of the invention as claimed, and to also draw attention to the fact that the invention is not limited to size, proportions, etc., nor to any particular field of use.
I claim:-
1. In an ejecting device having a rearwardly projecting plunger rod to be forwardly pushed by means of the thumb, said rod having longitudinally spaced. recesses, a collar slideable'and tiltable on said rod and having a rigidly attached laterally projecting thumb-piece, and a detent rigidly connected with said collar to engage any of said recesses, said detent and thumb-piece beingso-related that a forward push on said thumbpiece, tilting said collar in one direction, will hold said detent engaged with the selected recess, the detent being disengageable from the recess by tilting said collar in the other direction.
2 A structure as specified in claim 1; said detent being in the form of an arm integrally joined to said thumb-piece;
3. A cartridge for connection with a liquidejecting device, comprising a liquid-containing tube having a piston-forming plug closing its rear end, the front end of said tube being provided with an external circumferential ridge, a rubber cap closing the front end of said tube, said cap having a disk-like body portion and a continuous flange projecting rearwardly from and integral with the peripheral edge of said disk-like portion, said flange being stretched over said ridge and sealed to said tube behind said ridge, and an elongated tubular discharge nipple of considerably less diameter than said disk-like portion, said nipple being integral with a restricted central part of said disk-like portion and projecting forwardly therefrom, the front extremity of said nipple being integrally sealed but being severable to allow discharge of the tube contents.
4. A closure and discharge means for the front end of a liquid-containing tube, comprising a rubber cap having a disk-like body portion and a continuous flange integral with and projecting rearwardly from the peripheral edge of said disklike portion to surround the front end of the tube, and an elongated tubular discharge nipple of considerably less diameter than, said disk-like portion, said nipple being integrally joined to a restricted central part of said disk-like portion, the front end of said nipple being integrally sealed and being severable.
5. In-an ejecting device having a head provided with a'sock'et in its front end in which to secure 1 the rear end of a liquid-containing tube, and a plunger slidable longitudinally through said head; said head being of cylindrical form and of a diameter to be held between the first and second fingers of one hand, said ous circumferential flange'at its rear end to abut the palm side of said fingers while the plunger is being pushed with the thumb, said flange being of uniform radial dimension throughout its circumference, whereby it is not necessary to turn the head to any particular position with respect to the fingers.
