Description

March 17, 1925.
c. SMITHSON GAME Filed June 15 1922 M w w m. 0
Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL SMITHSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GAME.
Application filed June 15, 1922. Serial No. 568,487.
State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amusement devices and the main object is to provide a novel apparatus for a game to be played by two or more persons, preferably out of doors. Further objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification and are illustrated in the accompanying draw ing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a foil and a playing ring designed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section of the portion of the foil to which are secured the guards G.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 in -Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 4 is a diametrical section of the playing ring.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, S designates the tapered shank or arm of a foil F, having a handle H. A pair of guards G are pivoted as at D between the side members M of a frame which passes through and is rigidly secured in the foil F. Each plate is provided with an ear E against which the inner ends of the guards G may stop so that the guards may be held extended at right angles to the foil. A pair of spring leaves L are each secured at one end to the foil and are so arranged at their other ends that they will hold the guards G either open or closed, as desired, and as illustrated in Fig. 2. The foil is provided with a pair of notches N to receive the spring ends when they are to be closed or pinched in to let the guards G be opened or closed.
The playing ring R, of which many are usually used in the playing of the game, may
he made of any suitable material, but is preferably made of an inner iron ring I, to give weight, covered witlrfabric, or rubber, or some other soft and resilient material X to render it noiseless, less dangerous and more convenient to play with.
In playing the game it is the object of one player to throw the playing ring R with his foil so that it will strike, for instance, in a certain prescribed area; and it is the object of the other or opposing player, if only two are playing, to catch the ring on his foil, or at least to intercept it before it strikes the ground. It is understood of course that rules may be agreed upon which will equally affect each player and will form a standard guide in playing, but such rules need not here be prescribed.
It is further understood that suitable modifications may be, made in this device, provided, however, that such modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having therefore fully shown and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A device of the character described comprising a foil having a pair of guards pivotally secured near the handle thereof,
' and sprmg means on the foil co-acting with the uards for releasably securing the guar s in transverse or longitudinal positions with respect to the foil.
2. A foil of the character described having a pair ofguards pivotally secured near the handle end thereof, yieldable means engaging the guards for selectively securing the guards in longitudinal or transverse position with respect to the foil.
3. In a foil, a pair of spaced plates rigidly secured near the handle end of the foil, and extending to either side thereof, a pair of guards pivoted between the ends of said plates, said guards being adapted to be folded against or extended directly out from the foil.
4. A device of the class described comprising a foil having a pair of guards pivotally secured near the handle thereof, and manually compressed springs adapted to engage opposite edges of the guards tohold them in transverse or longitudinal positions, selectively, with respect to the foil.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARL SMITIISO N.
